Y5/6 spellings

In Year 5 and 6 this year we are teaching spellings in two week blocks. These first ten words will constitute the first two week block and will be tested on Friday 18th September.

Three Main Spelling Rules


Spelling rules:
When adding a suffix, remember these three
important spelling rules:
– Double up after a short vowel sound.
–  Drop the y and change it to i.
–  Drop the e before adding -ing.


This week’s words:


1. beginning — double up
2. occurring — double up
3. committed — double up
4. copied — drop the y
5. happiest — drop the y
6. replied — drop the y
7. achieving — drop the e
8. developing — drop the e
9. improving — drop the e
10. believing — drop the e


Remember
Double up: short vowel + one consonant →
double the consonant
occur → occurring
Drop the y: y → i before adding -ed, -er or -est
copy → copied
Drop the e: drop the final e before adding -ing
achieve → achieving
