Check out our Homework Guide – maybe even print it out and display it somewhere. It’s got some top tips to help you support your child’s home learning. (You can read the full Homework Policy just after the Homework Guide, too.)

Each day, we expect children in Years 1 to 6 to do some reading and some practice of number facts and spellings.

Reading: We expect children to read daily for at least 10-15 minutes. This can include books, comics, websites – any reading material. Look out for the focus or challenge prompt on your child’s homework sheet which they take home. Please comment in your child’s Reading Record at least once a week.
Number fluency: Your child should spend about 10 minutes practising number facts each day. Number fluency is about knowing number facts, like number bonds to ten (eg 3+7 and 4+6), and not having to work everything out (eg by using fingers). From Y2, it includes having rapid recall of multiplication facts (and corresponding division facts). By the end of Y4, pupils should know their times tables up to 12×12. Look out for the focus on the homework sheet we send home. Using NumBots and TimesTables Rock Stars will support fluency.
Spelling: On the homework sheet we send home. we provide a weekly list of words to learn in preparation for a test on the following Friday. We expect children to practise spellings little and often – about 5-10 minutes every day should be enough.

Each week, we provide a prompt for Talk Time and some additional Living and Learning thoughts.

Talk Time: This is an opportunity to engage in a discussion with other people at home (or even electronically eg via Zoom). We expect children to be able to return to school to share a range of views and ideas in class. The Talk Time discussion should last at least 10 minutes – or even shorter conversations with different people.
Living and Learning: This is our name for PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education). Each week, we have a new Living and Learning statement – the theme for the week. We let you know this on the school calendar – check out the activity to enhance the learning at the same time.

Teachers provide prompts for extra home learning.

Occasional: In each Class News, teachers frequently add some details about how you can support at home. The suggestions are practical and purposeful, meeting our curriculum intent to be enjoyable, relevant, inspiring and creative.

Remote learning

We’ll provide remote learning materials where a pupil is unable to attend school for a short-term basis but is able and well enough to continue their education remotely. This might include recovering from short-term infectious illnesses, preparing for or recovering from some operations, and recovering from injuries where attendance might inhibit recovery. Please contact us if your child needs remote education for a short-term period. We will provide this on an individual basis to best meet the needs of the child and context. It is likely to include activities set out in our website for English and Maths and some online learning with lessons from Oak National Academy.

It’s important to remember that attending school regularly is essential for children to get the most out of their school experience, for learning but also their social skills, their health (physical and mental), and their wider life chances. Department for Education guidance is clear:

Remote education should only ever be considered as a last resort where a decision has already been made that attendance at school is not possible, but pupils are able to continue learning…Remote education should not be viewed as an equal alternative to attendance in school. We expect schools to consider it only as a last resort when the alternative would be no education.
