Capacity and volume

Tuesday 08 May 2018

Today, we’ve continued our maths learning about measurement looking at capacity and volume.  We’ve been investigating, using different measuring jugs, cylinders and containers, different capacities with millilitres (ml) or litres (l) as our units.

Tanvi had spotted this morning that her sun cream bottle had a capacity of 200ml and this afternoon at our cricket festival we estimated how much water we had left in our water bottles (not much in the heat today!).  Have a look at the labels on household items to find their capacity.  For example, milk bottles, sauce bottles, toothpaste and other liquids.

Taken from the Year 2 age related expectations, here are the related objectives we’ve been learning.

24. choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels
25. compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =

We used a word study to consolidate our learning.

Here are some example questions of how this learning might appear in a KS1 maths reasoning SAT paper.

Also, take a look at Mathletics as new activities have been assigned for the children to follow up this learning at home.
