Friday 18 May 2018 – revision

As it is the last week of this half-term, instead of being given a list of words to learn, you should revise all the rules we have focused on so far this year. You will be tested on these rules on Friday 18 May 2018.

Evidence your revision on this page of your homework book. We’ll share our revision techniques in class so make sure you feel proud of what you’ve been doing at home!

Out of this world art

This week, as part of our space topic, we made some space art (learning about combining visual and tactile elements) inspired by the work of Peter Thorpe. After studying his style, we practised our own designs in our sketch books. We made some mistakes (which is a good thing!) and adapted our designs to ensure they matched up to our success criteria.

Then, after some excellent modelling under the visualiser by Filip we completed our final designs using chalk, pen and pencil.

Here’s some action shots:

Mindfulness

This week in Year 5, we’ve been enjoying mindfulness breaks on a morning. This is a great way to relax and look after our mental health. Each of the techniques we’ve used could easily be used at home. Help your child by asking them what the techniques are and encouraging them to use them in their free time or as a way to calm down.

Words of the Week (WOW)

This week, our ‘Words of the Week‘ are to be strewn, to obsess and to indulge.

word: to indulge (verb)

  • definition: allow oneself to enjoy the pleasure of or become involved in.
  • We all indulged ourselves with an ice-cream.

  • antonym: stifle

Challenge: Can your child use these words in conversation or in their spelling practice.

Living and Learning – money and wellbeing

Today, in our living and learning session, we were learning all about borrowing money. We started by discussing all the ways we can pay for things before thinking about when we might need to borrow money. We understood that there were certain circumstances when borrowing money could be a positive thing and then some where borrowing might be unnecessary.

Help at home by seeing if your child can remember their learning.

homophones

This week, we’re recapping some spellings from Year 3 and 4. Because they can be a bit tricky, and because we must spell them correctly for our writing to make sense, they are very important. Despite this, many of us still make mistakes with these words in our writing.

Children should practise spelling these words in preparation for a test on Friday 18 May 2018.

here / hear
where / were / we’re / wear
there / their / they’re
are / our
to / too / two
your / you’re

This week our homework is TalkTime: What small changes could we make to be healthier?

At home, children should discuss what small changes we can make to be a little bit healthier. These could be things like taking the stairs instead of the escalator, drinking more water or trying to drink less fizzy drinks.

This links to our writing in which we’re trying to persuade people to drink/eat less sugar.

Children should be ready to discuss this in class on Thursday 17 May 2018.

Reading, Sugar, Hugh and RIC

When reading First News on Tuesday, we came across an article about childhood obesity. The children were interested in this and we quickly put a halt to our reading to discuss this topic further. Having recently watched ‘Britain’s Fat Fight’, I shared some information about how much sugar there is in some of the things we drink (help at home by asking your child what they learnt about fruit juice vs Coke).

We were all fascinated and shocked in equal measure and decided we’d like to educate ourselves some more on this topic.

Today, as part of our reading session, we watched an extract from the programme and answered some questions in the style of a RIC (help at home by asking your child what R I C stands for). Stay tuned to find out more about our health-related sugar learning.

This week’s homework is Creative:

I can show my understanding of fractions.

As we’re coming to the end of our unit of fractions, I would like children to demonstrate what they have learnt in a creative way. This could be done with some artwork, creative writing or even something like cooking! This homework is due in on Thursday 10 May.

“I before E except after C, when the sound is ‘ee’!”

This is a well-known spelling rule but it can still be very tricky. Here’s a list of words to learn that either follow or break this rule. The last three words are this week’s ‘Words of the Week’. We’ve been using them all week so you should now make sure you’re confident spelling them. You should learn all of these words in preparation for a test on Friday 11 May 2018.
