This week’s homework is Creative and is due on Wednesday 16 September 2015.

To create your own ‘Lost Thing’.

In our first mini-topic of the year, we’ve been reading Shaun Tan’s ‘The Lost Thing’. We’ve asked lots of questions to find out more about it:

What is the lost thing? Where has it come from? Who left it there? How does it feel to be left there?

Now, create your own ‘Lost Thing’ and think about these questions for your own design. You might decide to design and label an image or you could gather odds and ends from  around the house to make your ‘Lost Thing’ in 3D.

Creative homework. This involves a creative piece of open-ended work based around an ‘I can…’ statement eg ‘I can use research skills to find out about a country.’ ‘I know how instructions are used’ Only one rule: don’t use more than one page of A4 (unless your teacher says otherwise!). Content will be a balanced mix of subjects.

Top Tips: Be as creative as you like! Chat about ideas with your child: Could the homework be in the form of a poster, a letter, a comic strip, some writing, a PowerPoint…? Could it use photos, drawings, foldout ‘extras’ on the page…?

This annual questionnaire has been compiled in consultation with our school council and helps us to find out pupil views on some of our key health issues at school. Please support your child to complete the health questionnaire by discussing these issues.  The questionnaire should be returned to your class teacher by Wednesday 15 July.

I can complete a diary about my lifestyle.

This includes what snacks they eat, how much they exercise do and how long they spend doing different activities. The homework has come from Mrs Taylor, who leads health in our school – it doesn’t take long to fill in and is used by local government to understand what children’s lives are like and how healthy they are. The diaries remain confidential and personal information will not be discussed in school if children don’t want to.

This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due on Thursday 02 June 2015.

I can work with fractions and time (Mathletics assigned tasks).

Log on to Mathletics and you will see that you have been assigned three tasks and a test on fractions and time. See if you can complete these on your own using the ? button to help if you get stuck. If your child has any problems logging on to Mathletics, let me know and I can give him/her time to complete this activity in school.

You don’t need to write anything in books for this. I will make a note as to whether the activity has been completed or not when homework books are handed in.

The homeworks this week are both Practice Makes Perfect.

The first is an English homework. Children have a section from the Alice in Wonderland book. Their task is to rewrite this text as a script. Children should remember to include stage directions to tell the actors how they should say something or how they should move across the stage.

The second homework is a Mathletics activity which checks children’s understanding of angles. They have to compare and estimate the size of angles.

This week’s homework is creative and is due on Wednesday 24 June 2015.

I can show what grows around me.

Get out and about, either into your garden or walking through the streets and parks, to see what plants you can see.

  • Are there flowers, trees, fruit or vegetables growing in the world around you?
  • Which can you name and which can you not?
  • Are there any plants you see over and over again?

Show us in any way you like what grows around you.

Maybe you want to…

  • Draw pictures.
  • Take photographs.
  • Create an information booklet.
  • Film walking around and noticing plants around you.
  • Describe the plants you find.
  • Make a quiz to see if others can name what you see.

The homework this week is creative.

I can show and explain what a half is.

In maths lessons this week, we’ve been learning about fractions. For their homework, I’d like children to prove to me that they know what a half is. To do this they must also think about what a half isn’t. They should show their explanations in any way they like: annotated diagrams, pictures, photographs, videos, a story.
