This week’s homework is creative and is due on Wednesday 30 September.
I can create a Lego mosaic/model.
Whilst reading First News during guided reading, some of us spotted a competition we’d like to get involved in. The idea is to design your own Lego mosaic/model that commemorates the Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch. The winner of the competition will have their model made in school with their whole class. So, for homework, if you want to be involved in the competition, design your mosaic to mark this historic event. If you’re not especially inspired or interested in the Royal Family, design a Lego mosaic or model that links to our Holidays Big Topic instead.
Check out the competition information for top tips for your model design and make sure it’s clear as we’ll send any entries off to be judged. (Information is in homework books and here).
Any homework not for the competition will be judged in class and displayed on our topic wall.

Our homework this week is a practice makes perfect. Pupils must fill in the missing gaps on a hundred square and use this to help them solve addition questions. We’ve been learning to use partitioning to help us solve addition questions in class. Asking your child to partition the smaller number will give them a starting point to solving the calculation. “How many steps of ten do you need to make?” and “How many steps of one do you need to make?” will match the language we have used in class when helping your child.
Look at the Addition video (especially Addition 6) for help with partitioning.
This homework is due on Wednesday 30 September.
A note on the spellings from last week
The spellings were given before phonics groups had been set. Both year 1 and 2 were set the same spellings for this week so do not worry if your child found these spellings challenging. As phonics groups have now been set up, spellings will be based on sounds from the phonics group which your child is in.

The homework this week is creative and is due in on Wednesday 23 September.
I can show what I know about holidays.
This is a chance to show what your child already knows about holidays before we begin our new topic.
Where do people go on holiday? Why do they go? What do they do there? Is a holiday always a good thing?
Encourage your child to be as creative as they can be!
For more information about homework and the types of homework, please read the first page of your child’s homework book. If you have any questions, please ask.
Enjoy your weekend!

What is a holiday?
I’ve asked children this week to creatively show what a holiday is. This could be an example of a holiday you have been on, want to go on or a more general reflection about holidays.

In Year 5, we do a Practice Makes Perfect homework each week. Last week, you were assigned Mathletics tasks. This week we’re practising using conjunctions in sentences.
To use conjunctions.
Write whole sentences in your book using one of the conjunctions in the list to add more information.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Wednesday 23 September 2016.
To discuss holidays.
Over dinner one day, discuss the topic ‘Holidays’ with the people in your house:
- What is the best holiday you’ve been on? (This might be a family holiday, a day out or even a school trip.)
- Why do people go on holiday?
- Where do people go on holiday and why?
- Where would your dream holiday destination be?
- What would you like to find out about in our Holidays Big Topic?
Talk Time homework – This involves a discussion topic eg ‘Should animals be kept in zoos?’ Children should make notes (even pictures, diagrams etc) ready to participate in a class / group discussion on the topic. Please make sure you write a comment about the Talk Time discussions in the homework books.
Top Tips: Turn the telly off! Sit around the dining table! Have a chat and share opinions and ideas! Children should talk with family, friends and each other. (Your child should write some notes in their Homework Books.)
11 September 2015
The homework this week is talk time and is due in on Wednesday 16 September.
I can talk about what I am going to do to make sure I have a successful year.
For more information about homework and the types of homework, please read the first page of your child’s homework book. If you have any questions, please ask.

This week’s homework is Creative and is due on Wednesday 16 September 2015.
To create your own ‘Lost Thing’.
In our first mini-topic of the year, we’ve been reading Shaun Tan’s ‘The Lost Thing’. We’ve asked lots of questions to find out more about it:
What is the lost thing? Where has it come from? Who left it there? How does it feel to be left there?
Now, create your own ‘Lost Thing’ and think about these questions for your own design. You might decide to design and label an image or you could gather odds and ends from around the house to make your ‘Lost Thing’ in 3D.
Creative homework. This involves a creative piece of open-ended work based around an ‘I can…’ statement eg ‘I can use research skills to find out about a country.’ ‘I know how instructions are used’ Only one rule: don’t use more than one page of A4 (unless your teacher says otherwise!). Content will be a balanced mix of subjects.
Top Tips: Be as creative as you like! Chat about ideas with your child: Could the homework be in the form of a poster, a letter, a comic strip, some writing, a PowerPoint…? Could it use photos, drawings, foldout ‘extras’ on the page…?
10 July 2015
This week’s whole school homework involves completing the pupil health questionnaire sent home with your child.
I can share my views about health.
This annual questionnaire has been compiled in consultation with our school council and helps us to find out pupil views on some of our key health issues at school. Please support your child to complete the health questionnaire by discussing these issues. The questionnaire should be returned to your class teacher by Wednesday 15 July.
