This week’s homework is practice makes perfect.  As the visit to Harlow Carr is on Wednesday, please make sure the homework is handed in by Thursday 02 July.

There are a list of words for the children to practise and then they are asked to use the words in different sentences.

This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due on Thursday 02 June 2015.

I can work with fractions and time (Mathletics assigned tasks).

Log on to Mathletics and you will see that you have been assigned three tasks and a test on fractions and time. See if you can complete these on your own using the ? button to help if you get stuck. If your child has any problems logging on to Mathletics, let me know and I can give him/her time to complete this activity in school.

You don’t need to write anything in books for this. I will make a note as to whether the activity has been completed or not when homework books are handed in.

The homeworks this week are both Practice Makes Perfect.

The first is an English homework. Children have a section from the Alice in Wonderland book. Their task is to rewrite this text as a script. Children should remember to include stage directions to tell the actors how they should say something or how they should move across the stage.

The second homework is a Mathletics activity which checks children’s understanding of angles. They have to compare and estimate the size of angles.

This week’s homework is creative and is due on Wednesday 24 June 2015.

I can show what grows around me.

Get out and about, either into your garden or walking through the streets and parks, to see what plants you can see.

  • Are there flowers, trees, fruit or vegetables growing in the world around you?
  • Which can you name and which can you not?
  • Are there any plants you see over and over again?

Show us in any way you like what grows around you.

Maybe you want to…

  • Draw pictures.
  • Take photographs.
  • Create an information booklet.
  • Film walking around and noticing plants around you.
  • Describe the plants you find.
  • Make a quiz to see if others can name what you see.

The homework this week is creative.

I can show and explain what a half is.

In maths lessons this week, we’ve been learning about fractions. For their homework, I’d like children to prove to me that they know what a half is. To do this they must also think about what a half isn’t. They should show their explanations in any way they like: annotated diagrams, pictures, photographs, videos, a story.

This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due on Wednesday 17th June 2015.

I can write an algorithm.

Can you used the key words to write an algorithm (set of instructions) to get from start to finish, passing through all of the stages of plant growth in the correct order? Use a counter, toy car or Playmobile figure to help you by moving them through the grid, thinking about the instructions they would need to be successful.

The homework this week is talk time and is related to our SEAL theme: changes.

I can change my learning / behaviour for the better.

Children should talk at home about what they can do to improve either their learning, behaviour or both.

This week’s homework is creative.

I know what grows in my local environment.

As always, be as creative as you like.

We would like children to look around the local environment to find particular flowers, plants and trees.

  • Do they know the name of them?  If they don’t, how can they find out?
  • Have they found any unusual plants?  If so, where were they?
  • What do they notice about leaves from different trees?

The homeworks this week are Practice Makes Perfect and Creative.

The Creative homework prepares us for our new topic by asking children to show what they know about Earth and Space. Your child could write a poem, create a story or report about our solar system. They could do some number crunching about planets. They could collect data over the weekend about light and shadows. They could speculate about other beings that we share space with.

The Practice Makes Perfect homework are two Mathletics activities. The first is about measuring angles which we’ve learnt recently in class. The second supports the learning this week on transformations: reflections, translations and rotation (though this is not part of the new curriculum in Y5).

Top Mathletics tips:

1. It is not a timed activity. Do not rush!

2. Do not rush!

3. Read the questions carefully.

4. Use jottings on a piece of paper to help you.

5. Tell me if you are finding an activity hard and I will find time to help you with it.
