This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due on Thursday 01 February.

I can calculate with fractions.

We learnt everything there is to know about fractions before Christmas and were able to calculate confidently. Sometimes, it can be hard to remember all of that information over a long period of time so, this week, we’re reminding ourselves of that fraction learning.

Your child should be able to solve all of the calculations they’ve been given independently. They could answer a few each day or they could challenge themselves to complete it in as many minutes as there are questions.

We’ll go through the answers when homework is returned on Thursday as well as discussing whether there are any of these calculations we need to go over again as a class.

This week the homework is practice makes perfect. We’ve been spending time learning number bonds to 20. A number bond is a number fact we know instantly, without needing to work it out, like 17+3 and 15+5.

The children’s task is to find the missing numbers to make number bonds to 20.

Please return homework books by next Thursday.

The homework this week is talk time.

I am aware of risks.

Being aware of risks and being able to assess the degree of risk is a crucial skill for living and learning. Discuss the different risks your child may encounter in and out of school and whether they are safe risks or not.

The homework this week is Talk Time and will be discussed in class on Thursday 25 January.

What is a safe risk?

This is in preparation for next week’s Living and Learning theme: I am aware of risks. Being aware of risks and being able to assess the degree of risk is a crucial skill for living independently and safely.

This week’s homework is Creative and is due on Thursday 25 January.

Create your own creature which is adapted to a certain environment.

We’ve explored how different animals have adapted to survive in different environments, thinking about whether they are a predator, prey or both.

  • Octopus have chromatophores all over their body which means they can camouflage against their surroundings.
  • Polar bears have large feet so that their weight is spread out over the ice, reducing the risk of it cracking.
  • Small fish swim in big shoals to make themselves appear larger to predators.

Decide where your creature lives, draw it and label your drawing to show us how it is adapted to its environment and other creatures that might live there.

The homework this week is creative and should be returned to class by Thursday 18 January.

I can show my understanding of division.

In maths, this week, we’ve used a range of strategies to help us divide: base ten, number lines and the ‘bus stop’ method. Some ideas for how to show this understanding creatively are:

  • make a game of snap
  • show grouping and sharing of objects
  • make a quiz
  • make a song or rhyme

This week, our homework is Talk Time:

True or false? Drugs are bad for you.

This, on the surface, may seem like a simple question with a simple answer. However, when you discuss this with your child, you may realise that this question is a great catalyst for a discussion on the merits of some drugs (medicines etc) and also the dangers associated with these drugs, and others.

We’ll talk about this during our homework review and our ‘Living and Learning’ sessions next week.

This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and links to the learning we’ve being doing in our grammar lessons this week.

  • Can I identify determiners?
  • Do I know what an active and passive sentence is?

The children have got some practice questions to have a go at independently which we’ll then go through together in our homework review next week on Thursday 18 January.

The homework this week is creative.

I know the different parts of my body.

We’re starting Life Forces, our new big topic, next week. We’ll first be learning about ourselves. In this homework, show us what you know about humans and our bodies. As always, it’s up to you how you present your homework. It could be a poster, a model, a collage, a video. It’s up to you!
