Homework

This week’s homework is creative and is due on Thursday 22 September.

I can show what I know about the world we live in.

This serves as a reflection on our recent mini-topic, ‘Where in the world?‘ In class, we discussed several ways in which children could respond. They could:

  • go for a walk using a map and make a short video-diary about how they used their map skills
  • identify physical and human geographical features in the local area
  • discuss Britain’s role in the world (we are small but influential… is that a good thing?)
  • create a song to help people remember key facts like continents, oceans, countries, counties and capitals.
  • make a weather report to show their knowledge of climates around the world

Plus many more. Last week, our homework was fantastic! Keep it up, Year 5!

The homework this week is creative and is due in on Thursday 22 September.

Where in the world?

We’ve been learning about the world in our topic lessons for the past two weeks. We’ve used atlases, maps and globes to locate and name the different countries in the United Kingdom and the different continents and oceans of the world.

In this homework, you can reflect on this learning and create something which shows it off. Alternatively, you could teach the rest of the class about a place in the world which is special to you. It could be a place really far away or really close.

This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due Thursday 22 September:

I understand place value.

We have been learning about place value for the past two weeks.

Here is the place value section for the Age Related Expectations for Year 3. You can find the full document here: https://moortown.leeds.sch.uk/learn-more/expectations-core-subjects/

  1. count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100
  2. find 10 or 100 more or less than a given number
  3. recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens, ones)
  4. compare and order numbers up to 1000
  5. identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
  6. read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals
  7. read and write numbers up to 1000 in words
  8. solve number problems and practical problems involving these ideas

The above points show what your child has learnt over the past two weeks in maths lessons. Note that we haven’t covered counting in multiples of 4 and 8 yet.

This homework allows your child to continue practising the basics of what we covered in order to keep up their skills!

This week’s homework is Creative and is due on Thursday 22 September.

What do I know about the world?

For the last two weeks, our learning has focused on our world. We’ve had to learn new terminology, be more familiar with the countries that make up given continents and understand what a map tells us about an area. Now it’s time to show what you know. This might involve some learning you’ve done in class but you could also teach us something new.

What could you do?

  • Create a test map that the rest of us have to see if we know which is the Tropic of Cancer and which are longitude and latitude.
  • Find some images of different places around the world and see whether we can say where they are.
  • Plan a walk through the countryside using an OS map, pointing out where you can visit along the way and whether you’ll be tired from walking up hills.
  • Draw a map of our local area and make sure your map has a key.

For this week’s Mathletics task, your child has been assigned three activities related to the learning we’ve done this week. This should be completed by Thursday 22 September.

There were some problems last week with some children’s activities becoming unassigned meaning they didn’t know which ones to complete. Here are the activities so you can find them yourselves if this happens again:

Place value

  • lowest common multiple
  • (something harder) rounding numbers

Add and subtract

  • negative or positive

As always, come and let me know before Thursday if there are any problems and, if you’re finding it tricky, I’ll be around on Wednesday lunchtime for you to complete a task then.

Each week, the children will be assigned a Mathletics challenge to work on at home.

This week, they have been assigned three tasks that relate to the learning we’ve done in class. These tasks must be completed by Thursday 15 September.

We’ll look at these tasks together once the children have completed them themselves and identify any strengths and weaknesses that occur from them. If for any reason they are unable to access Mathletics one week, it will be available every Wednesday lunchtime in Year 6 for them to complete it in school.

This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due on Thursday 15 September.

Choose a continent and see how many of its countries you can learn and locate on the map.

As our topic is Where in the World, we’ve been learning lots about different countries and where they are. This challenge will help them to become more familiar with their chosen continent and provides an opportunity to improve memory skills.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due Thursday 15 September:

Find out which country the flag from your peg label belongs to.

I would like you to use the brains around you to help you find out! Discuss this with people at home. If nobody knows it, you could look in an atlas or another non-fiction book. As a last resort, you could use the internet to help you but think carefully about what you would have to search for in order to find the answer!

Year 3 also have times tables each week to learn. These will be tested on Friday. This week is the 2 times table.

This week’s second homework is Mathletics and is due on THURSDAY 15 June.

You have been assigned three Mathletics tasks.

Children should log on to Mathletics and complete the three tasks (they are related to our learning this week).

Once again, if you experience any problems logging on to Mathletics please come and see me. If the problem cannot be resolved, children will be given time on a Wednesday lunchtime to complete the activities.

In Year 5 and 6, children receive two pieces of homework each week. This allows them more opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning outside of the classroom. Inside your child’s homework book is a parent/carer guide – it would be useful for you to have a quick read of this.

This week’s creative homework is due on THURSDAY 15 September.

I can show what makes a good learner.

This is a great opportunity for us to think about what we can do in class to make us successful learners. In class, we discussed several ways in which children could respond creatively:

  • a board game
  • a video
  • a comic strip
  • a poster
  • a 3D piece of art
  • an interactive quiz

There are other ways, too. The key point is that children are able to show the characteristics of a good learner through a creative response. I can’t wait to see them.
