18 March 2016

This week’s creative homework is due on Wednesday 23 March.

To be able to use speech punctuation.

Using the tips provided, the children need to show that they are able to punctuate speech accurately or create an activity or example that would help others to punctuate speech accurately. There are lots of ways you could do this:

  • Write a story (or section of) that includes dialogue
  • Create a top tips sheet that would teach someone how to use them
  • Make a game that would help us to practise.
  • Write a section of text with punctuation missing to be corrected (but have an answer sheet ready).

Board game fun!

We all really enjoyed learning about different types of punctuation through a board game last week. Sometimes we landed on a ‘tricky tester’ and had to answer a test question. On our next go we could land on ‘dastardly dictation’ where we had to listen to a sentence and write it with the correct punctuation.

Everybody had fun while making sure they were checking their answers and learning from it, too.

Fab feedback!

“the living embodiment of ‘great things in small packages'”

Moortown Primary has a long history of supporting teachers, headteachers and schools across Leeds. This morning, five new headteachers visited us to learn more about self-evaluating (where a school evaluates its own provision and works out how it can improve – look at our self-evaluation summary) and improvement planning. They also took the opportunity of looking around school. Here’s some feedback following their visit:

What a wonderful experience and privilege to be invited to look behind the doors of your fabulous school; engaged learners; friendly, happy, smiley children; clearly dedicated staff and an enticing learning environment for everyone to grow and learn.

It was also lovely to have a look around your school which must be the living embodiment of ‘great things in small packages’. The school feels like a well run ship with everyone buying into the principles and practices you want. The pupils were also a credit in that they didn’t even look up from their learning when we all walked in.

A wonderful school you have there – I will work extremely hard to have somewhere that shines as a beacon for its community like your school does for Moortown.

One of this week’s homework is Talk Time.

Is it OK to take a life?

Children need to think about this moral question from a wide-range of viewpoints. It’s pretty deep for a Y5 class! In class, we’ll have a debate but they must be prepared to debate for and against this question. They must make notes to help when debating.

11 March 2016

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework is due on Wednesday 16 March.

Each child has been assigned three task on Mathletics to be completed at home. They link to the subtraction and addition we’ve been working on for the last week so all of the children should be confident with their working out.

If you cannot access the activities for any reason, let me know on Monday so that the homework can be completed by Wednesday. Thank you.

On-line safety

Thanks to the parents / carers who attended one of the two on-line safety workshops this week… ‘Really eye-opening’ was one comment after the session.

Thanks to the parents / carers who attended one of the two on-line safety workshops this week, led by experts from the NSPCC and O2. Parents were very positive about the sessions:

  • “Very useful, especially the resources that I found out are available and the leaflets for further reference.”
  • “Very informative and educational. Gave real-life examples. Definitely inspired to go on NSPCC website to educate myself more.”
  • “Opened my eyes to lots of apps I had never heard of.”
  • “I got some very useful tips on online safety. Has made me reconsider the lack of restrictions we have at home.”
  • “Really eye-opening. Great to know where I can go to check apps out.”

I can work with money

Last week’s Creative homework was based on Maths and the children really got their creative juices flowing to produce some great pieces of work.

Lots of our money homework is now on our Maths challenge table so the children can practise their skills through games, questions and challenges that have been set by each other.

World Book Week

Year 5 love books so we had a great time celebrating this last week. On Monday, we visited the Book Fair to see what great new books we could get for ourselves. There were some great choices for £1 which we could all go for with our free book voucher and those of use who had money to spend found some fantastic books.

Then, Thursday brought us World Book Day and a whole host of book characters strolled into the classroom. What a fantastic array of costumes that really got us in the mood for our book themed day.

We dived into the story of ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. We began by imagining what the crayons would say to Duncan  before reading the story and writing our own letters back to the crayons.

HURRAY FOR BOOKS!
