History: Ancient Egypt

This week in History, we have been looking at how different groups of people contributed to the achievements of Ancient Egypt.

The children started off by matching the different job roles to their definitions and then ordering them in the importance of their contributions to Ancient Egyptian society. Here are some examples:

Afterwards, we focused in on the Ancient Egyptian farmers and the children used hieroglyphics to decode information about their job roles. Take a look at some of our fantastic work!

Living and Learning – I respect others

In Living and Learning, we looked at how we respect others. We discussed discrimination, protected characteristics and the Equality Act 2010.

Discrimination is defined as “the unfair treatment of people because of who they are or because they have a certain characteristic.”

The protected characteristics are:

  • Race
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Pregnancy and Maternity
  • Disability
  • Religion/Belief
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and Civil partnership

We looked at different scenarios (both made up and real-life cases), where people were treated unfairly and tried to find a solution to the problem.

We now have a greater understanding that individual characteristics make everyone in the world unique and we can respect people in several different ways.

Reading Records

So far this half term, we have battled who has the best book, explored vocabulary and this week we are creating comic strips.

Take a look at some of our fantastic reading record activities:

Please remember to bring your reading records into school every Friday so we can continue to share your great work. If you need help to complete an activity, take a look in the front of your reading records as each task is explained or simply ask me.

I’m looking forward to seeing your homework!

Well Done Year 5!

A HUGE Well done to Year 5 for powering through our first week at school. You have been resilient learners; working incredibly hard this week, even with the challenge of being in the hall. You should be especially proud!

Important information:

  • P.E. days are Monday and Wednesday (please come into school in your P.E kit on these days). Please check the uniform policy for appropriate PE kit.
  • Homework – every Friday your child will come home with homework, which will be reviewed the following Friday.
  • Spelling – your child will come home with a list of spellings from that week’s learning.
  • Reading – your child will come home with an activity to complete in their reading records.
  • Times Tables – your child will come home with a times tables target. Practise in short (but often) chunks of about 10-15 minutes per day.
  • Talk Time- your child will come home with a topic to discuss with you at home.
  • Bags- whilst we have limited space in the hall, please continue to not bring bags into school.

Keep up the great work Year 5!
