Maths: outdoor learning

Maths was taken outdoors today for some hands-on learning!

Your children have been learning how to mark and explain numbers 20-99 on a number line. Today we explored those numbers through the concept of length.

We used chalk and metre sticks to draw out a full metre. When then explored dividing these lines into halves and tenths to help us actively explore and understand numbers from 20 to 99.

Help at home: give your child a number between 20-99 and ask them…

What is the previous number? What is the next number?

What is the previous multiple of ten? What is the next multiple of ten?

Topic: GFoL role play

Yesterday, we learnt all about Samuel Pepys and his important role during the Great Fire of London. We read adapted versions of his diary entries and discussed how these have helped us learn lots about the Great Fire of London. His diaries are a useful artefact that have taught us about how people responded to the fire across the four days.

Your children were given different scenarios that people in London, during the Great Fire, faced and they used the information from Samuel Pepys’ diaries to role play what the people of London might have done.

We ran away from the fire and then got on boats.

We were digging holes and putting our jewels and gold in to keep them safe.

We helped pull down houses and then we ran away after.

Four of us were running away form the fire and the other helped us into their houses.

Help at home: ask your children to explain how people reacted when the fire started.
