12 June 2020: Home learning

Friday’s here Y5 and I hope you’ve all had a fun and productive week!

We at school are doing the same learning as you guys at home!

The final home learning tasks for this week are maths, reading and science.

Maths – LO: equivalent fractions, percentages and decimals

Click here to watch the video and answer the questions as we go along.

Reading – LO: summarising a text

Your task today continues our learning about ‘Hrungnir against the Gods’. I would like you to create a book cover for this short story. Think about what happens in the story when creating your book cover.

You could use your feelings graph to help you show what the characters may look like, too.

When you’ve finished, I’d like you to summarise the story of ‘Hrungnir against the Gods’ in the following ways:

20 words
10 words
5 words
1 word

Good luck!

Science – LO: life cycles of animals and humans

Today’s learning is courtesy of Finlay – thanks for suggesting this idea, Fin! – and I found the perfect BBC Bitesize lesson.
Click here to start learning about the life cycles of animals and humans. Watch the two videos and complete the mini activities – there are six in total. Everyone must email me with how you did on the tasks!
If you have any ideas for what we could learn about next, please let me know at oliwain@spherefederation.org!

Challenge 1:

  2. 0.9
  3. 0.25

  5. 0.76 – I’m aware I wrote this as 75% on the video. Thanks to Felix for spotting my ‘deliberate’ mistake!
  6. 0.10

Challenge 2:

It could be 50%

It must be 25%

It can’t be 75%

Onto today’s learning…

We have maths, reading and writing.

Maths – LO: percentages as fractions and decimals

Click here for your video! As always, answer the questions as we go along.

Reading – LO: inference

Writing – LO: writing a story

Join me, by clicking here, for today’s writing lesson where we go through some R2s for story writing and have a look at a section I’ve written for mine.

Send in your story to your teacher once it’s finished for some feedback!

Celebrating Home Learning

I am still ever so proud of the sheer effort and determination you lot are putting into your home learning. It seems like it has been ages but you guys have shown me just how dedicated to your learning you are – it’s wonderful!

Below are some pictures of learning that have been sent to me.

See if you can find your own learning or work out who the other pieces of learning belong to!

Remember, keep sending me your work so I can send you stars and steps and well done again.

10 June 2020: Home learning

It’s the middle of the week already! How time flies…

Today’s learning consists of reading, maths and writing.

Maths – LO: percentages

Today we’re diverging from decimals to percentages.

You know the drill by now – here is the video!

Writing – LO: planning a story

Today’s writing lesson uses BBC Bitesize as we learn about the planning process for a story.
You need to read the article, watch the videos and complete activity one. Make sure to check out David Walliams reading a short story for inspiration!
Once you’ve finished, click here to download a plan for a story about travelling to a new world, click here to download a plan for a 500 word dilemma (a problem) story or click here to download a more general plan where you can decide every aspect.

You can decide which one you’re going to write!
Tomorrow, we will begin to actually write our story so just focus on the planning today – using the website and writing your plan should take around 40 minutes.

Reading – LO: retrieval

Your task today is to read the following extract from ‘Illustrated Norse Myths’ and complete the task that follows. This can be found at the bottom of the document.

Start the task here.

Please send in your work to oliwain@spherefederation.org

Good luck!

Maths – LO: algebra

We’re continuing our recap of algebra this week. Click here to start today’s video.
Once you’re done, click here for your task.
Remember to start with the letter D, work out the next letter and then work from top to bottom each time to piece together the puzzle. This is quite tricky so don’t worry if you need a break in between completing it but it is very satisfying when you beat the challenge!

Year 5 class photo

Hi everybody!

A parent of a Y5 pupil has organised a class photo for us all via Zoom. This Zoom call will take place at 4 pm on Tuesday 02 June and the details have been emailed out – ask school is you’re not sure. Some of the teaching team and I will be attending and we hope that you can make it, too!
