Physical Activity: Challenge!

On Monday, you may remember I challenged you to complete a physical activity of your choice – one that ensured you were safe, happy and healthy!

There have been some extreme talents on show this week – have a look for yourself!

Well done to these who have challenged me to their toilet roll challenge! They’ve done an absolutely fantastic job!

I’m sure everybody will agree that I certainly have my work cut out! Watch this space…

Another well done is in order – a response to my earlier challenge with 50 jumps on a Pogo stick – some with no hands! Crazy stuff – keep it up!

Y6 Maths – LO: decimals

Hope you guys enjoyed the treasure hunt yesterday! The pictures/videos you’ve been sending are amazing and the items are very creative! We will definitely do one again soon.
Today’s learning is all about decimals. Last week, you were rounding them but this week, you’ll be using place value knowledge, timesing (Is that even a word?) or dividing and adding or subtracting. As always, if you need help, you can email me.

Y5&Y6 Reading – LO: fact and opinion
Your learning is all about facts and opinions.
First of all, use this (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zs44jxs/articles/z3wgqhv) BBC Bitesize
guide to remind you of the difference between facts and opinions.
Now, open up the FirstNews paper and go to page 4; it’s called 20 things to know and tell. Read the article and then answer these questions.
Challenge
We would like you to tell us your opinion about any article from this week’s FirstNews. We want you to email us with your views. You should tell us the article you’ve read and what you think about it. However, in your explanation, we’d like you to include some facts, too. You can show us that you know these are facts by underlining or writing them in bold. We’re looking forward to hearing what you think!

Y5&Y6 Geography – LO: I know some European countries and their capital cities.

Today’s learning follows closely from yesterdays. Yesterday you were asked to pick six new countries in Europe and find out and remember their capital cities.

Here are six that I learnt!

  1. Latvia – Riga
  2. Moldova – Chisinau
  3. Slovenia – Ljubljana
  4. Estonia – Tallinn
  5. Montenegro – Podgorica
  6. Lichtenstein – Vaduz

Using four out of the six new capital cities you have learnt, you are to create a fact file for each one! In your fact file, I would like you to provide the following information:

  1. Population
  2. Size (area)
  3. Location (within the country)
  4. Flag
  5. Language
  6. Currency
  7. Main River (if there is one)
  8. Distinguishable features (e.g. a mountain or national park nearby)
  9. Climate
  10. An interesting fact!

Remember, when researching your capital cities, be safe online and think about how we kept safe online whilst in school!

Today’s task is a quiz! Click here to have a go. Have more than one go, can you beat your first score? How many can you get by the end of the day?

Your task is to learn 6 countries and their capital cities in Europe.

These countries must be outside of the UK – so you can’t have England (London), Scotland (Edinburgh), Wales (Cardiff) or Northern Ireland (Belfast).

If you come across a country that you don’t know the capital for, then have a look online, in an atlas or ask someone in your home!

Y5&Y6 Geography – LO: I know how some physical and human features in the UK have changed over time.

This term’s topic is a geography one – so expect to see more geography home learning! At the moment, we are recapping our previous geography topic ‘Where in the World Am I?’ before moving into our new topic ‘Explorers’.

Today’s task involves looking at how some physical and human features in Moortown have changed over time.

The questions within the task are to be answered in your home learning book. You may either think to yourself about the questions, talk to someone in your home about them or conduct some research of your own!

Y5&6 Reading – LO: summarise

Continuing with our First News theme, this week, today’s task is to summarise certain articles in note form or a short sentence or two. Everyone must complete Part B (on page two) and Part A (on page one) is optional.
First, you’ve got to scan the paper for the article photo. Then, write in the information needed and write your summary. Remember to write notes where you can and only include the key information! Click here for the questions.
 
Challenge
Go to BBC Sport or other similar website – it can be anything you’re interested in. Your challenge is to summarise a web article of your choice in 20, 10 and 5 words. Send them in and we’ll include the best in #HoHLF!

Y5 Maths – LO: multiplication

Today’s learning continues with multiplication. There are three sections. Complete the questions starting from the left and working your way to the challenge on the right. Click here to start!

Y5&6 Reading – LO: retrieval
 
Your task today, like we’ve done in the past, is to complete a crossword puzzle using an article from First News. You need to complete the second page but if you need a bit more help, use page one.
There are two challenges you could do today.
Challenge 1: create your own video that would help children lower down school answer retrieval questions.
Challenge 2: create your own retrieval questions based on an article from FirstNews. You could get creative and do this as a crossword, or a word search, or even a treasure hunt.
Y5&6 Science – LO: I know my science vocabulary.
Following on from yesterday’s recap about light and how shadows are formed, today’s learning involves completing a crossword which recaps all our vocabulary from this topic of work. Click here to access the crossword.
Challenge
Make a silly sentence for each of our vocabulary words. Make sure that the word is accurately used and that it makes sense!

Happy Monday, everybody!

As you may know, there have been changes to the home learning (such as the time it is posted and the amount of writing tasks) as we have gone along and this is thanks to your feedback – we greatly appreciate any feedback you may have so please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Moving forward, there will be instances of lessons from BBC bitesize and other similar websites. Also, there will be lessons which simply feature a video of your teacher teaching some of the different home learning subjects, too!

Before we crack on with today’s learning, here are the answers for the learning that took place on Friday.

Y5 Maths – LO: multiplication and division

Following on from our addition and subtraction learning on Thursday, today’s learning looks at multiplication and division. Click here for today’s task.

Y6 Maths – LO: numbers to 10 million
I hope you found last Friday’s learning ok! We will continue to do one or two every now and again (plus other topics) so let me know your thoughts.
Your learning today is a recap of place value using numbers up to ten million. Click here for the task – you can either print it out or write your answers in your home learning books.

Y5&6 Reading – LO: explore and evaluate
 
Your task today is simple: read! Download First News and enjoy reading it! Check out Ancient Amphibians on page 8 – it reminds me of our science learning when we discovered that wood frogs freeze their bodies to survive winter!
Your challenge is to email me with a picture of you reading it in the most unusual place or to the most unusual object!
Y5&Y6 Science – LO: I know how shadows are formed.
Today’s science learning recaps some learning that we did in the second half of the autumn term!
Our topic at this point was all about Light, and today’s task focuses on this.
Your task today is to complete the following:
1) Find a shadow in or around your house (one that is already there without you having to move anything) and in your home learning book, draw a diagram of it!
2) Label your diagram (including the object creating the shadow, the light source, shadow…)
3) Make your own shadow! You will need an opaque object and a light source!
4) Write an explanation as to how shadows are formed using as many of the following words as you can:
opaque
light
shadow
light ray
straight
block
Challenge:
Email me a picture of the shadow you’ve made whilst explaining what happens to it when you move the object closer/further away to the light source.

Welcome Back!

Hello everybody,

I hope you’ve all managed to get back into the current ‘norm’ this week after what I hope was a lovely Easter holiday for you all.

Just a quick note from me – I’m sorry the images for the home learning tasks weren’t showing properly/at all and I hope that it didn’t cause too much inconvenience. Thank you for letting me know, too.

I know it may still feel strange having to do your learning from home –  it does for me! Despite this, remember that we are all in this together and you are all doing a superb job at getting on with it and generally being awesome!

I miss seeing you all and I hope to see you very soon.

Maths – Monday answers

Y5 Maths – LO: area of rectangles
Building on from yesterday’s work on perimeter, today we are going to be finding the area of rectangles.
How do we find the area?
Recap: To find the area of a shape, we need to multiply the length by the width
eg:
8cm x 2cm = 16cm
However, with area, we are looking at the number of squares that cover the whole shape.
Like this:
As we can see, there are 16 squares.
Therefore, when writing down what the area is, we say: 16cm squared.
We write it this like: 16cm²
Today’s task:

How many rectangles can you draw with an area of 30cm² ?

Y5&6 Writing – LO: ENPs
 
Building from our ENPs at a sentence level yesterday, your task today is to write a paragraph describing the setting you are currently in.
Before you start, have a look at this picture below.
This is a picture of a place called Kotor. It’s in Montenegro.
 
Below is a setting description for Kotor which contains ENPs.
Your task is to describe your current setting.
Tips:
-Use your sentences from yesterday in your writing – these will help you!
-Use my example to help you with your work, too. Can you magpie any bits you like from mine and make them relevant to your setting? I’m sure if there are some clouds in the sky today you could alter this one.
 
R2s:
-Different sentence starters (light and fluffy, several buildings…, casting shadows etc)
 
–ENPs
-Relative clauses (, which is substantial in the area,)
 
–Ambitious vocabulary (colossal, embellished…)
