Revision

This week, children have been given a copy of the statutory word list for years 5 and 6. This list contains examples of the words children should know how to spell by the end of Year 6. However, many of the words on the list are similar to the rules and patterns we have learnt this year. Children should revise these rules/words in preparation for a test next week. Evidence of this revision should be shown in their homework books.

This week, our homework is Talk Time: I know and understand the importance of telling the truth.

Telling the truth is so important in many aspects of life. Sometimes, it can mean we can solve problems better – especially in a school environment. Children should talk about the statement at home in preparation for a class discussion.

Ocean Awareness Day in Y5

Written by Isaac Cooper (in collaboration with Mr Catherall)

Year 5 had a whale of a time on Ocean Awareness Day. After looking at some awful pictures about the effect plastic waste can have on our ocean we tried to make a change.

One of our favourite activities was making a huge whale of plastic rubbish donated by some members of staff and some of our class (thank you to anyone who contributed).

We were learning about the negative effect plastic has on our oceans so we decided to recycle the plastic waste as a whale. Here is our finished product…

When you look at this think about these questions:

Why would you pollute our ocean?

Why would you throw rubbish on the floor?

Why would you do this to the animals?

After this, we made posters to raise awareness.

Finally, we used scratch to think about how the ocean can be explored.

What a great day!

Yeadon Tarn

On Monday, Year 5 went to Yeadon Tarn for would later be described as ‘The best trip ever!’

Inspired by our class novel (Kensuke’s Kingdom) we all had a go at sailing. In the novel, by Michael Morpurgo, the main character and his family set off on a round the world sailing trip. However, one night, the family hit some rough seas and Micheal ends up on a desert island with just dog for company.

When we weren’t learning all about how to catch the wind in our sails on the open water, we were either making an iMovie trailer for our remake of Kensuke’s Kingdom we were writing some water inspired poetry.

All the children and adults had a fantastic day and we’ll continue to reflect on our new experience as we read through our novel.

Here’s some action shots from the day…

15 June 2018

This week’s homework is Talk Time and will be discussed on Friday 22 June.

I can talk about my learning.

Below are some images taken of the learning we have been part of this week. Look at the photos together and ask your child to tell you about their learning. There are lots of things they could tell you or that you could ask:

  • Did you enjoy that learning?
  • Do you thinking you improved on any skills in that lesson?
  • If you could do that lesson again, what would you do differently/the same?
  • What was the purpose of that learning?
  • What was your favourite learning from this week?

For Talk Time homework, the children should make a few brief notes on the the conversations they’ve had to help them in our class discussion.

This week, we’re focussing on some more homophones. These words are tricky because they sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings.

Children should practise spelling these words in preparation for a test on Friday 22 June 2018.

cereal
serial
father
farther
guessed
guest
morning
mourning
who’s
whose

This week, our homework is Creative: I can show what I know about angles.

In maths this week we’ve started our new geometry topic. So far we’ve focused on angles: what they are, how we use a protractor, how we know if it is acute, obtuse, reflex or a right angle and lots of estimating. This homework will allow children to consolidate this learning.

We discussed lots of ways in which children might respond to this. Here are a few examples…

  • find angles around your house, take pictures of them and estimate their size
  • create a poster which could help someone use a protractor
  • film yourself measuring angles
  • go out and about, creating a Vlog of all the angles you can spot

Of course there are many ways in which you might respond to this. Please remember that it is a creative homework and children should be spending about 30 minutes on completing it.

Homophones

For the next two weeks, our spelling focus will be all about homophones: words that sound the same but are spelt differently. In order to practise, I would like you to create a short (possibly silly) story using all the words below.

cereal – serial

father – farther

guessed – guest

morning – mourning

who’s – whose

You should complete this activity by Thursday 14 June 2018 so we can enjoy them as part of our homework review.
