11 May 2017

For the next two weeks, our spelling focus will be all about adding apostrophes. We add apostrophes for possession (to show that something belongs to someone – eg Jack’s hat) or for contraction (to shorten words – eg isn’t).

To get our learning started, children have been given a sheet to complete. This should be returned by Thursday 18 May.

11 May 2017

This week, children have two pieces of homework. Both are due on Thursday 18 May.

The first is Practice Makes Perfect: I can score 1000 points on Mathletics.

Please note: this does not have to be on ‘Live’ Mathletics.

The second is Creative: I can appreciate art.

We may not all ‘like’ art, we may not all aspire to be artists, but we can all appreciate art to some degree. For this homework, children should respond in a creative manner and show that they can appreciate art in some way. We discussed it as a class and the children decided that some good ideas were:

  • create their own piece of art
  • visit an art exhibition and document their trip
  • imitate their favourite artist’s work
  • do an interview with a (fake?) famous artist
  • have a conversation (and record this in some way) with someone who does not particularly like art but can appreciate it in some way
  • make a collage of all the art they like/own
  • draw a picture, and ask someone you know to draw one, too. Then, compare and contrast them
  • make a puppet show about why people appreciate art (possibly with an arty background)

There are, of course, many other ideas, too.

05 May 2017

This week, children have two pieces of homework. Both should be completed by Thursday 11 May. They should also learn the 11x table and, more importantly by Year 5, the related key facts discussed during parents evening (eg if 5 x 11 = 55 then we know that 55 divided by 11 = 5. We also know that 50 x 11 = 550 because it is 10x bigger).

The first piece is Talk Time: I know when it’s appropriate to apologise and why it’s important to do so.

Children should discuss this with an adult and be ready to share this with the class.

The second piece is Practice Makes Perfect: I can show what I know about 2D shapes.

Children should complete the sheet they have been given which recaps learning from previous years. We will be building on, and consolidating, this learning next week in our maths lessons.

Suffixes

This week’s spellings are all words that contain suffixes. A suffix is added to a root word to change/alter its meaning. Children often make spelling mistakes when adding suffixes to words. They should learn how to spell these words in preparation for a test on Friday 12 May.

thoughtful
enjoyable
ownership
equipment
courageously
silliest
altruism
excitement
frequently
purposeful

28 April 2017

For the next two weeks, we will be focusing all of our ‘spelling energy’ on some tricky suffixes. To help us practise choosing the correct suffix, children should complete the worksheet they have been given. This should be completed by Thursday 04 May.

28 April 2017

This week, children have two pieces of homework. Both pieces are due Thursday 04 May.

The first is Creative: I can prove that grammar is important.

We focus on grammar and punctuation a lot in school but I would like children to prove that grammar is important in real life. After all, correct grammar/punctuation can be the difference between eating with your Grandma and eating your Grandma.

  • Let’s eat, Grandma.
  • Let’s eat Grandma.

The second piece is Talk Time: I can justify my own opinion (Should we spend so much money on exploring space?)

Last year, NASA’s budget was increased by $18.5 billion. This is obviously a substantial amount of money. Through discussions with an adult, I would like children to decide if they think that spending this much is acceptable. We’ll have a debate as part of our homework review next week.

24 March 2017

i before e except after c – when the sound is ‘ee’.

Last week, children investigated the rule. As a class, we refined the rule to be the above. This week, in preparation for a test on Friday 31 March, children should learn how to spell the following words.

either
receive
their – there
deceive
conscience
ceiling
efficient
sufficient
believe

24 March 2017

This week, children have two pieces of homework.

The first is Practice Makes Perfect: Score 1000 points on Mathletics.

The second is Talk TimeI can justify my own opinion. Children should discuss the following question with someone at home… ‘Would you rather explore the ocean or space?’

We will then debate this in class next week.

Also, children should practise all times tables up to 12×12 in preparation for an end of term times table check on Friday 31 March 2017.

17 March 2017

“i before e except after c!”

Many of us have heard this rule but just how true is it? Children should investigate this ‘rule’ and find out how true it is. Are there many exceptions? Can you find examples where the rule does help? Children should evidence their investigation on the spelling page of their homework book.
