Summer fun

Science this half term
This half term, in science, we are biologists and we are learning all about plants.
Here is a summary of the key learning and also the vocabulary we are using.
We used our observation skills when looking at the parts of a plant.
We’ve also been planting seeds and measuring our plants as they start to grow.
In this video, have a look to see what goes on underground when a seed has been planted. What parts of a plant can you see?
We’ve also been doing some gardening in the front playground planters.
It’s been great to see the children spotting plants in their garden and in their neighbourhood.
Can you identify any of the plants? What parts of the plants can you see?
Today, we finished our plants learning with a walk around Moortown Park to see what plants we could spot. We used the Seek App to help to identify plants that we found.
Living and Learning – Body Image
This week in Year 4, we spoke about what body image is and how important it is that we have a positive and healthy body image.
The media are well known for editing and modifying images of celebrities and models to fit their idea of beauty. We identified how certain images have been edited and why the media would want to do this. We decided as a class that they do this in order to persuade us to buy their products.
The class discussed how important it was to accept and make friends with the things that we can’t change about ourselves. This creates a positive voice in our head where we feel happy and confident. We can change certain things about ourselves such as, eating healthily and exercising regularly which is key.
Every single person is special and beautiful in there own way and everyone has their own view of what that means. Beauty is in the eye of beholder!
Ask your child at home what they think is more important – beauty outside or beauty within!
Herd Farm
Hello all!
Year 4’s residential to Herd Farm was absolutely fantastic! For some of the children, it was their first night away from home but they all were incredibly mature and were having too much fun to even have a second to worry.
They all completed three different activities; the giant swing, the assault course and crate stacking. The most nerve-wracking activity was the giant swing but every single child overcame their fears and had a go on it. Some even went to the very top! The assault course ended up in some of the children getting soaked as the aim was to end up with the most water in their pot by the end! This was tricky… Finally, the crate stacking became a competition to see who could climb the highest. We managed to get to 11 crates high.
All of the staff were impressed at how enthusiastic and polite our class were. At each meal time, the children helped to set the tables. They sat and ate their amazing food and helped to tidy and clear up too!
I hope the children managed to get a good nights sleep on Friday night – I know we did!
Miss Birch, Mrs Charlesworth, and Miss Gilliland
Where has this half-term gone? It seems to have flown by!
Lots of learning in Reception last week about animals and their habitats. The children have enjoyed looking at maps and naming countries and continents
Phonics
We are learning within Phase for of Little Wandle Revised Letters and sounds. In this phase the children will be blending words with adjacent consonants and learning more ‘tricky words’.
The reading books we use in school and send as an ebook are closely linked to the phonics learning. It is important that your child reads and re-reads these books to help them gain confidence and fluency.
Science!
This term in science we are learning all about plants. We planted some seeds in a plastic bag 2 weeks ago. This enabled us to be able to seed the roots emerge from the seed and then later see the shot appear. We have been fascinated to watch our seeds grow over time. It has also really helped us learn our vocabulary for this topic!
Today, it was time to plant our seeds into pots so they can grow even taller! We had a great time potting our plants and gave them a good water at the end.
Homework this week
As part of the homework sheet this week I have attached a sheet of phase 5 graphemes. It is really important that your child learns this really well. They should be able to say the sound the grapheme makes and then read some of the example words.
For example, ay makes an /ai/ sound in the word play.
Knowing these sounds will enable your child to read words and books much more fluently.
Thanks for your support.
Skipping festival
We are working hard on our skipping skills, that we learnt with Jodi from Skipping School, ready for the Year 2 Skipping Festival that is coming up after half term (Thursday 9 June).
We are very much looking forward to cheering on our friends, watching some great skipping skills and most of all having FUN.
All children will need to bring a packed lunch to eat on our return to school. They should also bring a fruit snack and full water bottle to take with them to the festival.
Please return the permission slip and the photograph permission form to school by Friday 27th May 2022.
Don’t forget that skipping ropes can be purchased from the office at a subsidised cost of £3 for your child to practise these skills at home.
Brownlee Triathlon
This week, some of our Key Stage 2 children took part in the Brownlee Triathlon. Sadly, this was minus the swimming as the event was running behind due to the wet weather earlier in the day.
‘I found the cycling easy but the running was harder.’ Olivia
‘I found it all really fun.’ Kian
‘I wish I hadn’t sprinted at the beginning because I didn’t realise there was more running!’ Christina
‘I was sad that we didn’t get to swim but still found it lots of fun!’ Edris
All the children behaved impeccably and showed great team spirit.
Thank you to the staff who took the children.
The AJ Bell World Triathlon Championship Series is returning to Leeds for a sixth time on 11-12 June and this year there is a chance for families to get involved.

Martial Arts
Today, we enjoyed a martial arts session from Premier Martial arts.
The children were excellent throughout learning some key martial arts skills. They had great focus, listening and enthusiasm. Well done Year 2!
Please refer to the letter brought home tonight, if your child is interested in attending the club.
