Online learning
All the Year one adults have continued to be amazed by the attitude and resilience of the children as they have adapted to a very different week of learning at home. Well done to all the children. We’d also like to say a big thank you to adults at home who have supported the children alongside your own commitments at this time.
It has been great to see their smiley faces and their confidence to contribute to lessons in this different way.
Thank you for sharing their home learning with us. Here are a few examples.
Super writing inspired by this picture from Pobble365.
Reading at home
Great science learning based on our fluency text.
PE outside in the sunshine
Phonics, spelling practice and generally keeping busy
Finally, this has been our Living and Learning statement for this week.
While we have been restricted to our homes this week, one of our class members has been demonstrating this statement perfectly.
02 July 2021: Home learning
Good morning!
I hope you enjoyed the learning yesterday.
Here are some extra activities linked to today’s learning.
Don’t forget the learning which was emailed to you today.
Phonics
Write the words to match each picture.
Practise ‘tricky words’ with this song.
Phonics Play
Login in using Sphere (username) Spher3 (password)
Maths
Today’s problem solving is based on the book, ‘How many legs’.
Top tip for watching YouTube with your child: go to the settings cog (it’s along the play bar) and turn off autoplay – this avoids an inappropriate clip coming up automatically, and helps to discourage your child from passively watching clip after clip.
Can you create your own ‘How many legs’ problems.
You could combine different characters and find the total number of legs they would have altogether.
Explore which characters could have 12 legs altogether.
Use drawings to show your learning.
Today’s story is Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson.
Have a great weekend!
01 July 2021: Home learning
Hello, everyone!
Here are some activities to go along with today’s phonics and maths lessons.
Phonics
Write the words for each picture.
Listen to this tricky word song.
Maths
We read ‘Mr Gumpy’s Outing‘ in class this week. Our maths is linked to this story.
Listen to the story again.
A problem to solve!
Who could be in Mr Gumpy’s boat if there are 10 legs altogether?
Could there be 9 legs in the boat?
Draw a picture to help you work it out.
Make a map
Can you draw Mr Gumpy’s journey down the river?
Draw each of the characters and use the map to help tell the story.
Here’s a story for you.
Please send photos of your learning.

Reception Class Trip
Due to the current situation in school, we have decided to cancel our trip to Valley Gardens on the 7 July.
Instead, we will walk to Moortown Park for a picnic.
Please send your child in their uniform and with a packed lunch and drink.
We will still have a wonderful time and an ice-cream!
Live Zoom Lessons
All of the Year One team have been very impressed with how well the children have coped with another unexpected session of home learning. Our live Zoom lessons began on Monday and we were able to get straight on with learning. The children have shown readiness, resourcefulness, resilience and, best of all, they are still smiling!
We are very proud of all the class!
Here are a few examples of some learning this week.

Self-Isolating?
We’re really missing you in school and we can’t wait to have you back.
We hope you’re managing to stay happy, healthy and safe while you’re not with us here in school. You are still very much a part of our school community so please get in touch with us.
You should have received an email with details of the home learning-please check your junk mail.
If you have not received this or have any other questions, please get in touch.

DT: design process

In our DT lessons this week, we’ve been evaluating existing products to gain some inspiration and ideas for our own designs.
We’ve also begun to explore our ideas using TechCard and next we’ll be drawing our final designs.
The design criteria for our go kart prototypes:
– move by rolling on wheels
– have a steering system
– a platform to sit on and not fall out of
– a braking system (extra, aspirational challenge)
Living and Learning: body image

In our lesson this week, we talked about beauty and the perception of it.
We discussed how the media push an idea of what beautiful is and that images you see in the media aren’t always what they seem. We looked at some images that had been edited before they were published and spotted the differences from the original photos. The differences were quite scary!
A Cracking Eggsperiment
In a recent science lesson in Y3, we set up a comparative and fair test to answer the following question.
Which drinks have the worst effect on our teeth?
We used the following drinks in our experiment.
Coke, Diet Coke, orange juice and water
We conducted an observation over time to see the effects of these drinks on our teeth.
Don’t worry… we didn’t hold orange juice in our mouths for a week!
We used eggs instead! An egg shell contains calcium – the same mineral that is found in our enamel (the protective layer on our teeth).
We placed the eggs (which were the same type and size) into beakers and poured over 200ml of each liquid and placed them to one side.
We then made predictions about which drink we thought would have the worst effect.
“I think the drink that will have the worst effect will be the Coke because it contains lots of sugar!” said Tommy.
After leaving our eggs for 6 days, we removed them from their liquid and observed the changes.
See for yourself below:
orange juice
Coke
Diet Coke with toothpaste
Diet Coke
water
The effects of these drinks are clear to see!
Now, obviously, you wouldn’t keep a drink like orange juice in your mouth for a whole week.
What we can take away from this learning is that if you do decide to have a drink like Coke or orange juice every once in a while, then it seems like a good idea to wash it down with some water after!
We can also see that the toothpaste has protected the egg shell from as much staining than without it!
See what your child can remember about our learning!
Down on the farm
On Tuesday, Year 1 enjoyed a day out at Hesketh Farm.
We were very proud of all the children and it was an absolute pleasure to take them out.
