Living and Learning: physical activity

Posted on Monday 19 July 2021 by Mr Wilks

During health week, we talked about the benefits of physical activity on our health. We learned that there is a link between physical health and academic success.

We then talked about how we can make sure we get 60 minutes of physical activity everyday. We split it into 30minutes at home and 30 minutes at school. We had lots of different ideas and made a poster showing how we can achieve the 60 goal.

At home, talk to your child about physical activity and help them to get their 30minutes each day!

Living and Learning: Physical Health Skipping into summer

Posted on Sunday 18 July 2021 by Mrs Taylor

Year 1 have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Skipping into summer project this year with Jodi and Chris from Skipping School.

While Jodi and Chris haven’t been able to come into school to deliver skipping skills sessions, we’ve enjoyed their online tutorials.

At the end of our Being Healthy themed week, we celebrated our skipping skills by sharing them with Year 2. It was great to see how the children have improved their coordination to perform some amazing skipping techniques.

Then, we had a ‘surprise’ visitor – Jodi came to see our super skipping skills!

Just wanted to say another big thank you for inviting me into school this morning. It was such a joy to see all those smiley faces 🙂 The skill level for that age group, especially your Year 1s, was AMAZING! Being able to speed bounce, side swing and even backwards cross over in Year 1 is just incredible! And then to have them bouncing in the big rope in groups to finish things off at play time was so lovely.
Thank you for taking part in the project and keeping skipping with us.

Design and Technology

Posted on Friday 16 July 2021 by Mr Roundtree

This half term, Year 2 have been designing many different free standing structures.

Each lesson, we have been given a design brief explaining what our design and technology task would be that day.
We then followed the design process: evaluate, design, make and evaluate for each of these structures.
The first structure we made was a strong and stable wall for Humpty Dumpty. We discovered that interlocking bricks were more stable than single-file bricks.
The second structure we made was a swing using frame structures. We learnt how triangles are the strongest shape and used this information to help us design our swings.
Finally, this week we built a stable, freestanding structure for Humpty Dumpty’s garden.. We learnt how to join structures together to ensure that they wouldn’t fall over.
