Egg rolling… in the snow!

Posted on Sunday 31 March 2013 by Mrs Weekes

Despite the weather, egg rolling still happened in the back playground on Thursday. A path was cleared so there were no snow drifts to contend with and there were some eggstraordinary egg rollers. Here are the winners from each class.

Have a relaxing break.

Perfect performance

Posted on Sunday 31 March 2013 by Mrs Taylor

On the final day of term, twelve children from Key Stage 2 performed at the annual Allerton Grange dance showcase.  Despite a few nerves, all the group performed brilliantly.  Being the first to show our dance, the children could then sit back and enjoy the rest of the routines by other local primary schools and students from Allerton Grange.

Well done to all the children who attended the after-school club and worked with the Allerton Grange dance leaders to learn this routine – your hard work really showed.

Thank you to all the parents / carers who came to support the event.

Super Science Day!

My task during Super Science Day was to make slime by causing a chemical reaction to happen between different materials. The children worked brilliantly together to make some pretty disgusting, gooey slime!

Super Science Day Talk Time

Posted on Wednesday 27 March 2013 by Mr Roundtree

We don’t normally set specific homework tasks in the holidays, but we encourage you to spend some time discussing the nine science activities your child will have taken part in, especially considering what they have learnt. The learning objectives were:

  • I know that dyes are made up of other colours
  • I know why objects float
  • I can create a gas with a solid and a liquid
  • I know that static electricity creates a charge
  • I know about irreversible changes
  • I know the effects of a chemical reaction
  • I know what exercise does to my body
  • I am aware of acids and alkalis
  • I know what happens when you mix water with oil

Check out the pictures from the day to help jog your child’s memory of each activity… Can they match the learning objective to the photo?

More Super Science Day

Is it magic? No! We learnt that opposite charges attract so the balloon’s negative charge is attracted to positive charges on clothes, hair and walls. This is what makes them stick to each other.

Remarkable recounts

Posted on Friday 22 March 2013 by

To bring our recount writing to a close, I thought I would upload some amusing recounts performed by the children. The children have demonstrated some really fantastic ICT skills.

Can you tell which words would be in brackets in this recount?

Science day warm-up

Posted on Thursday 21 March 2013 by Mrs Taylor

Getting the balance right – What should we eat to stay healthy? and Cough, sneeze, sniff and wheeze – How do we breathe? were two interactive sessions led by Leeds University students to Key Stage 2 classes this afternoon.

As part of the science in school initiative, two students delivered a variety of interactive activities and informative learning.

Year 3 and 4 focussed on What should we eat to stay healthy?

This session covered the important components of our diets – the major components which provide us with energy, and the building blocks that we need for growth and to maintain a healthy body, and the minor components – the vitamins and minerals.

Year 5 and 6 investigated How do we breathe?

  • What causes us to breathe?
  • How the lungs function under normal circumstances and after exercise
  • The danger to the lungs of smoking or passive smoking

All in preparation for a packed science themed-day tomorrow!

Football tournament at Leeds Grammar School

Posted on Sunday 10 March 2013 by

Hi Lucas,

I’m really gutted you missed the football tournament on Saturday because you were poorly (I hope you’re feeling better for Monday!). I just thought I’d let you know what went on as we all had a fab day out!

On Saturday morning, we all met on the playing fields at Leeds Grammar School. I was a little bit anxious and I think the others were too. It was great to see all the parents there but that added to me feeling a bit tense. Our first game was against Leeds Grammar School (gulp!) which didn’t help my nerves.

I’m afraid to say that within a few minutes we were already 3-0 down. However, after our nerves settled we started to play with confidence. Farhaan was giving it all his energy – I don’t think he stopped running all game! Mustafah was his usual calm self and was holding the ball up easily. All parents were in full voice and I could feel the energy beginning to rise. All of a sudden, the ball broke free in midfield. Josh stormed down the wing, skipping past a few players. Now, all the adults were screaming. With all his might, Josh fired the ball into the top corner. The keeper, who didn’t stand a chance of stopping the ball, stood motionless in the goal. The crowd roared! Moortown Primary had arrived!

Our third game was against Immaculate Heart. Spurred on by the crowd, Moortown Primary began to play more and more like a team. You would have been so proud if you saw them, Lucas. Fluid passing between Callum, Billy and Luca meant that opponents were regularly chasing shadows. We were still under pressure but we had our special weapon – Harris. I can only describe his goalkeeping as the best I’d ever seen. In the end, we drew the match after a very dubious penalty that we conceded. Here’s a picture of the action during that game:

Our final match was against Richmond House. We were tired and cold – it had started to snow! However, if you could have seen the determination on Harvey’s face you would have not known we had played five games. We kicked off and for the first time that day we went ahead. Evan scored one of the best goals I’ve ever seen a child score! He danced around two defenders and sent his left foot through the middle of the ball and saw it fly past the keeper into the bottom right-hand corner. He ran away with his hand held high screaming at the top of his voice! We still had a long way to go but some excellent tackling from Theo meant that we held onto our lead. Before you knew it, we were 3-0 ahead! Umar and Alex made sure we held onto that lead. We conceded two goals in the end but we still won after a nail-biting final few minutes.

So there you have it, Lucas. We had a  fantastic day out which ended on a high. Don’t worry though; there’s talk of playing more football tournaments in the future. Evan’s Dad also recorded some of the games so I’ll show you them when I get them.

Hope you get better soon,

Mr Redfearn

Polling station opens early

Posted on Sunday 10 March 2013 by Mrs Weekes

As you know Moortown Primary is used for a polling station in May. Tradition was broken this week when we became a polling station on a Thursday in March; the councillors being elected were not from the local government but from each class in school. Well done to all those children who prepared and made speeches and congratulations to those who were elected.
