What are the Covid-19 symptoms?
In the Autumn term, it’s quite common for children to pick up a bug along the way – colds, for example. After a long period of isolation away from others, maybe this is even more likely if our immunity thresholds are lower. We’ve got quite a few children absent from school today, but not necessarily with Covid-19 symptoms.
The NHS list these as the three symptoms:
- a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
- a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
- a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal
It’s the cough symptom that might be trickiest. To help, do read the description: ‘this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours’.
A blocked or runny nose isn’t a symptom listed on the NHS website so we’d still expect this person to be in school.
There are two really important ways to protect your primary-aged child from Covid-19 (and other illnesses):
- wash your hands more often, and for longer – is your child doing this as a matter of routine at home?
- social distance – are you and everyone in your family aware of the rule of six?

Hello everyone,
It’s Friday so your child will be coming home with a homework task: we’re setting weekly homework as we normally do. The key difference here is that Homework Books should stay at home for the time being.
Just as normal, the tasks are posted on the website. Instead of the task pasted into books, children take home a piece of paper with the task on, too. The tasks are a variety of Talk Time, Practice Makes Perfect and Creative, but especially the first two.
Parents, you can email a picture of the completed task (or task in process) or update about a completed task. (Lots of you were doing this with the home learning tasks we set in Spring and Summer terms). The homework will be reviewed in school, so some pictures would be good!
Homework
This week’s homework is talk time and will be reviewed on Thursday 17 September.
I can talk about what I’ve learnt this week.
Sit down as a family and have a chat about how school has been this week. What have they learnt? What have they been proud of? What have they found tricky?
We’ll then discuss this in class on Thursday.
11 September 2020
Today, the children have brought home their homework book. Please do have a look inside this book as there is some useful information including our homework guide.
Taken from the Autumn for All document, here’s some information about how homework is a bit different at the start of this year.
The homework this week is Talk Time.
‘I can talk about my first week back at school.’
For this homework, please have a discussion about your child’s first week back at school. Discuss what they have learnt, what they have enjoyed and what they like about being back at school.
If your child would like to, they can write about what you have discussed.
If you’d like to share what you have discussed with your child, please email me at benparker@spherefederation.org before Thursday 17 September.
11 September 2020
The homework this week is Practice Makes Perfect and should be completed by Thursday 17 September.
I can learn a rhyme by heart.
As we begin our learning in Year 1 with the whole school topic of After the Fall, we’d like the children to learn the nursery rhyme associated with the book, Humpty Dumpty. We’d love to see some videos of the children reading/singing the rhyme (carolinetaylor@spherefederation.org and jackiefreeman@spherefederation.org).
The children can listen to the rhyme here.

Happy Friday, everyone!
It’s the last day of term and what a crazy year this has been!
Finally, now we’ve all seen it at school, here is the Y6 Leavers video. Hopefully you can keep it and look back on it in years to come and be reminded of how awesome we think you are. Enjoy!
Mr Wain and I would just like to thank you all, both adults and children, for all your hard work – not just over this tricky lockdown period – but the entire year. It’s been a pleasure to work with each and every one of you.
Today is the final part to our Dragon’s Den task!

Week 14: 17 July 2020: Home learning
Well, it’s the last day of the summer term. Sadly, the school year has ended in a very unexpected way. All the staff in Year 2 are incredibly proud of each and everyone of you.
Today, I have given you some tasks about continuing to stay safe online. We have been using technology an awful lot over the last few months and it is very important to stay safe online just as you do in the real world.
Task 1
Staying safe online
Watch Episode 3 – Playing games
https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/jessie-and-friends-videos/
Talk about how to stay safe when playing games online.
Task 2
Choose an activity to complete.
T2-I-050-Internet-Safety-Wordsearch_ver_1
T-I-025-Internet-Safety-Things-to-Keep-Safe-Activity-Sheet
Task 3
It is important to understand that sometimes things don’t appear quite ‘right’ online and can be dangerous or distressing.
When should you ask an adult for help or advice?
Who are personal ‘safe’ adults who children can trust about online worries?
Can you sort these scenarios into two groups?
- Does it feel right?
- Does it feel wrong?

Hello children
First of all, I’d like to share a poem I wrote for you. I hope you enjoy it!
Task 1
Who was Roald Dahl?
I’d like you to take a look around the Roald Dahl Museum. There is so much to see and lots of online activities. Have fun on your visit and note down anything you find very interesting.
https://www.roalddahl.com/museum/visit/virtual-museum-tour
Task 2
LO: I can predict
Look at these closely at these pictures.
Now, answer these questions.
Who is the main character?
What do you think is in the box that’s on the seat in the van? Explain your answer.
Where could the van be going?
True or false? This story is set in a hot place. You need to give reasons for your answer.
Do you think this story will make you laugh?
Now, you can enjoy the film.
Were your predictions correct?

Task 3
Reading
Sing along with this song. Read the words as you go.
So long, farewell (from the Sound of Music)
There’s a sad sort of clanging
From the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple, too
And up in the nursery
An absurd little bird
Is popping out to say coo-coo
(Coo-coo, coo-coo)
coo-coo Regretfully they tell us
coo-coo But firmly they compel us
coo-coo To say goodbye
To you
So long, farewell
Auf wiedersehen, goodnight
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight
So long, farewell
auf Wiedersehen, adieu
Adieu, adieu
To you and you and you
So long, farewell
Au revoir, auf Wiedersehen
I’d like to stay
And taste my first champagne
Yes?
No!
So long, farewell
Auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
I leave and heave
A sigh and say goodbye
Goodbye
I’m glad to go
I cannot tell a lie
I flit, I float
I fleetly flee, I fly
The sun has gone
To bed and so must I
So long, farewell
auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Now, write a list of any words that are new to you. Can you find out what they mean?
Week 14: 16 July 2020: Home learning
Hello Year 1! Nearly there 🙂
Here are your tasks for today:

I’ve posted some photos of some the things we did before lockdown. I miss those days and can’t wait to have everyone back in school. I want you to have a look at them and talk about them with someone in your house.
Then, click on this sheet and write about your favourite memories. You can also write about other things that you can remember even if there isn’t a picture of it.
