This week’s homework is talk time. It is a moral homework linked to our Time Travel topic:

You are the King or Queen and your castle is under siege (the enemy has surrounded you, cutting off supplies). You spot one of your knights outside the castle. Would you open the drawbridge to let them in or not?

Children should be ready to debate this in class on Thursday.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due Thursday 15 November:

Is it ever OK to break a promise?

This homework encourages your child to discuss the morals around breaking a promise. As a class we discussed different situations and if we thought if was right or wrong to break a promise. For example, if somebody was being unkind to our friend would we break a promise to help the friend in need? Be sure to include these types of problems in your conversation.

Make sure to jot down some notes from your conversation in your homework book ready for our class debate.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and will be discussed on Thursday 15 November.

Has flight had a negative or positive impact on the world?

We continue our inventions Time Travel topic by moving on to flight. The Wright Brothers were the first to successfully create a flying machine which could take off and land under its own power. At home, discuss what impact this has had on the world, both negative and positive. Do you all agree or are there differences of opinion in your household?

Make sure your child writes a few bullet pointed notes about the discussion you’ve had to help them in the class discussion on Thursday.

This week, the whole school has the same Talk Time homework. In preparation for the upcoming School Council elections, children should complete one of the following tasks:

  • I can prepare a speech (School Council elections).
  • I know the importance of voting.

It’s time for children to consider if they would like to stand for election for our new School Council.  With two representatives from each class, chosen democratically by their peers, all children are encouraged to take an active part in pupil voice.

Elections for our new school council will take place on Thursday 25 October with our polling station and ballot boxes at the ready.  Candidates will have the opportunity to give their election speech to their class on Wednesday 24 October or Thursday 25 October.

What makes a good school councillor has been considered by our current school council.

  • ‘use all the 8 Rs for learning’
  • ‘be respectful’
  • ‘help others’
  • ‘be a good speaker and listener (to members of your class and in the meetings)’
  • ‘tell the truth’
  • ‘be confident with your ideas’
  • ‘accept the views of others even if you don’t agree’
  • ‘be friendly and approachable’
  • ‘make good choices in class and around school’

Hints for your speech include:

  • What skills and abilities would a good school councillor have?
  • What are you particularly good at that would help you to be a great school councillor?
  • What do you think would make the school better?
  • What could you do that people would really like?
  • Think of things that are realistic, maybe that you could do yourself, rather than having to ask other people to do

Thank you to our current school councillors for all their ideas and contributions.  We hope you have enjoyed this role and responsibility.  You’re welcome to stand again for election.

Good luck to all children who decide to stand in the elections.

If you choose not to stand in the election, you should consider the importance of voting.

I can remember my Must Dos!

This week, our homework is Practice Makes Perfect. The homework is focused on some of our Must Dos: capital letters at the start of sentences and for proper nouns and using the correct punctuation at the end of sentences: . / ! or ?. Must Dos are non-negotiable expectations that the Year 3 children must follow throughout each subject.

Have a look at the paragraph of writing below, correcting any Must Do mistakes. This is due in on Thursday 18 October.

Challenge: can you create a key to find and underline – adverbs, verbs, nouns, contractions and conjunctions?

This week’s homework is creative:

I can show my understanding of multi-step addition and subtraction problems.

We’ve been learning about maths problems that require more than one calculation in order to solve. You could show your understanding in a creative way such as:

  • a story
  • a poster
  • drawings
  • real life scenarios

We will discuss our learning on Friday 19 October.

The homework this week is creative.

I can show what it would have been like to experience the Great Fire of London.

We’ve been learning about the fire this week in class. Children should create something to show that they can appreciate what it would have been like to be in London at that time.

  • They could write a diary entry as someone who experienced the fire. This could be a real person like Thomas the baker, the King or Samuel Pepys (whose diary about the fire told us a lot about the fire. Alternatively, it could be the diary of a made-up person.
  • Children could create a timeline of the fire showing the key events.
  • They could create a piece of art showing what the fire could have looked like.
