All of the spellings this week have -fer endings and we’re learning how to add a suffix to these words. There will be no test on Friday but your child needs to practise adding suffixes to these words correctly. Sometimes you need to double the ‘r’ and sometimes you don’t.

All children should be practising their spellings in their homework book, using the techniques suggested at the back which we also use in class.

  • refer
  • prefer
  • transfer
  • offer

  • -ed
  • -ing
  • -ence
  • -al

This week’s time tables test will be on the 4 x table but we’ll be challenging ourselves with the more difficult questions we’ve been practising recently. We’re improving every day with these.

This week, spelling will focus on one of our must dos: apostrophes for contractions. This is due in on Thursday 11 October.

Practise contractions by re-writing these sentences into your books, changing the underlined words for its contraction.  Don’t forget to use the apostrophe in the right place. Use the list at the bottom of the page to find the spellings of the contractions you need.

  1. I am having an amazing day today.
  2. I do not want to play that game.
  3. I will help you.
  4. She did not like my cake.
  5. There is not any butter left.
  6. We can not find it anywhere!
  7. You should not go in there!
  8. I was not able to go to her party.
  9. You are too late.
  10. I could not help it!
  11. They have got a large house with a swimming pool
  12. If you leave, there will not be enough people to play.

This week’s spelling list is formed with words that have the prefix un- or dis-. If you don’t know what any of the words mean, find out! Think about the root word and how the prefix changes the meaning.

  • Can you show your words in a creative way?
  • Can you write them in your own sentences?
appoint honest tie happy appear
own wrap able like comfort

We will share our sentences in class on Friday 05 October.

We are practising a tines table we already know: our 3 times tables.

double up

This week’s activity is to find at least ten words where you must double up the consonant for a short vowel sound. Have a go at practising the words in a creative way.  Once you’ve finished, write each word in your own sentence or story. Challenge yourself to include a relative clause!

Be ready to discuss your findings in class on Thursday 04 October.

This week’s spellings are all words which need you to drop the ‘y’ for an ‘i’. Then, you add either ed or es to make the past tense or a plural noun. If you’re not sure what any of them mean, find out. Children may be asked to spell similar words which follow the same spelling pattern:

carry/ied fly/ies family/ies hurry/ied copy/ied
try/ied daisy/ies worry/ied puppy/ies story/ies

We are learning our 3 times tables.
