This week’s spelling activity is to come up with a list of words that you find tricky to spell. Once you’ve finished, write each word in your own sentence.

  • Can you write them in a silly story?
  • Can you draw a picture to represent the word?
  • Can you think of a way to teach others how to spell it?

In class, we discussed a few tricky spellings you might want to make a note of:

  • school
  • laugh
  • rough
  • quiet
  • does
  • cough

Revision

This week, children have been given a copy of the statutory word list for years 5 and 6. This list contains examples of the words children should know how to spell by the end of Year 6. However, many of the words on the list are similar to the rules and patterns we have learnt this year. Children should revise these rules/words in preparation for a test next week. Evidence of this revision should be shown in their homework books.

There are only five spellings this week. However, children will have to use the words correctly in context to get the spelling correct.

There are three cows.
Their cat is naughty.
They’re playing tennis.
Our class work hard.
Are we nearly there?

We will be having weekly spelling tests now until the end of term. The children have been given a copy of the statutory word list for Years 3 and 4.

The class are very familiar with all of these words. However, we don’t just want the children to learn these for a test.  We want to make sure that they implement this learning into their writing.

We will test the children on a selection of these words so they need to work on the spellings that they are unsure of.

This week’s spelling homework is a little creative and is due on Thursday 24 June.

Using these Greek and Latin roots and their meanings, create your own animals where their name gives you an idea of their appearance and/or behaviour.

Eg punctata quadrocornisbiped (dotted four-horned two footed animal). Create at least five different names and then choose one to draw and write a paragraph informing us about it.

geo – means “the earth” photo – “means light”
path – means “feeling or

suffering”

gress – means “to walk”
phon – means “sound” dict – which means “to say”
therm – means “heat” tract – means “to pull”
mem – means “keep in mind” scribe – means “to write”
tele – means “far away” mit – means “to send”
fract – means “to break” graph – means “to write”
bi – means “two” ped – means “foot”
corni – means “horn” punct – means “point, pricked, pierced”

This week’s spelling list is formed using our Must Do homophones for Year 3. Children should practise listening to a sentence read aloud and writing the correct word. For example:

“I use my ears to hear what you’re saying.”

Can you think of any fun ways to remember which word is right? Can you write some silly sentences? Can you show your words creatively?

  • your/you’re
  • its/it’s
  • of/off
  • of/have (shouldn’t have)
  • which/witch

Children should learn these in preparation for a spelling test on Friday 22 June.
