This week’s spellings link to our class novel and the sailing we’ve done at Yeadon Tarn. I’ll be asking the children to spell ten of the sailing terminology on the diagram below and there’ll be extra points available for being able to identify where it is on the diagram and even more for if they can say what job it has. These spellings will be tested on Friday 15 June 2018.

This week’s spelling list is formed using our Must Do homophones for Year 3. Children should practise listening to a sentence read aloud and writing the correct word. For example:

“I use my ears to hear what you are saying.”

Can you think of any fun ways to remember which word is right? Can you write some silly sentences? Can you show your words creatively?

  • here/hear
  • where/wear
  • there/their/they’re
  • are/our
  • two/too/to

Children should learn these in preparation for a spelling test on Friday 15 June.

Homophones

For the next two weeks, our spelling focus will be all about homophones: words that sound the same but are spelt differently. In order to practise, I would like you to create a short (possibly silly) story using all the words below.

cereal – serial

father – farther

guessed – guest

morning – mourning

who’s – whose

You should complete this activity by Thursday 14 June 2018 so we can enjoy them as part of our homework review.

The spellings this week consolidate our suffix learning by testing any eight words from the previous two lists: -ful & -less and -ment & -ness.

This week’s spelling list is formed using ten of the words on the Year 3/4 statutory spellings. There isn’t a pattern with these words but could you think of any fun ways to remember how to spell them? If you don’t know what any of the words mean, find out!
  • Can you show your words in a creative way?
  • Can you include your words in sentences or paragraphs?
  • Can you draw what the word is?
bicycle century exercise forward interest
natural popular recent special thought
Children should learn these spellings in preparation for a test on Friday 25 May.

Friday 18 May 2018 – revision

As it is the last week of this half-term, instead of being given a list of words to learn, you should revise all the rules we have focused on so far this year. You will be tested on these rules on Friday 18 May 2018.

Evidence your revision on this page of your homework book. We’ll share our revision techniques in class so make sure you feel proud of what you’ve been doing at home!

We’re learning about -ness and -ment suffixes in phonics next week. Usually, you just add the suffix on to the root word. The exceptions are when the word ends in a y and is more than one syllable long. Eg. happiness or merriment. Argument is another exception as you drop the e from argue.

happy         happiness
sad             sadness
kind            kindness
quiet          quietness
dark           darkness
punish        punishment
enjoy          enjoyment
move           movement
amaze         amazement
measure      measurement
