This week’s spelling activity is an investigation. You need to find words that contain the ‘g’ sound that’s spelt ‘gue’ and the ‘k’ sound spelt with ‘que’. For example: in catalogue and antique.
- How many different words can you find?
- Can you spot any patterns?
- Can you show your words in a creative way?
- Can you write your words in your own sentences?
You need to learn these patterns in preparation for a test on Thursday 11 January.

Create ways for you to remember how to spell these words and generally practise using the strategies in the back of your homework book. Spelling practice is best done little and often so make sure you come back to the spellings at least three times in the week. Date your practice and ask an adult to sign it to show that you’re practising regularly. There will be a test on Friday 12 January.

08.12.17 – revision
As it is the end of term, instead of giving children a list of words to learn, I would like children to use their homework books to revise all the rules we have learnt so far this year. They should prepare themselves for a test on Thursday 14 December.
08 December 2017
I’ve given the children the Year 5/6 spelling list for them to choose ten words which they feel they need to practise.
We’ve discussed that spelling practice should be little and often rather than being completed all in one night. The practice the children have been doing has improved massively from the beginning of the year (and there are lots of good examples for you to take a look at on the website). However, we’re now going to work on maintaining this standard by practising little and often.
I’ve asked the children to date the practice they do and make sure that they complete a small amount at least three times during the week.
These spellings will then be tested by their partner as we’ll all be learning different words.

01.12.17 – Apostrophes
This week, I will not be giving you a spelling list. Instead, during our spelling test on Friday 08 December, I will read out ten sentences that contain at least one apostrophe. You will need to figure out which words need an apostrophe and use it correctly.
e.g Some of the book’s pages were torn.
I believe they are Mr Jones’ golf clubs.
I can’t believe you lost your book.
To prepare for the test, you should practise using apostrophes for possession and contraction/omission.
Use this page of your homework to prove you have practised.
