The spellings this week are (almost all) proper nouns which link in with our new Time Travel topic. As these words are proper nouns, they need a capital letter.

The final word is conquer. I would like the children to learn this word and any other words in its ‘family’, eg conquered. Children could be tested on any of these ‘family’ words.

1. Great Britain
2. British
3. Anglo-Saxons
4. Celts
5. Vikings
6. Tudors
7. Stuarts
8. Georgians
9. Victorians
10. conquer

This week’s homework is practice makes perfect.  Please make sure it is handed in by Wednesday 28 January.

I can describe my house and I know my address.

There have been lots of adjectives used this week to describe different types of houses.  It would be great if the children could write a description of their house or their favourite room.  This is also an ideal opportunity for the children to learn their address – it is important that they know where they live even if it is just the number of the house and the street name.

Please make sure that homework books are handed in by Wednesday – there are a small number of children who are not doing their homework or not handing it in.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Wednesday 28 January.

Which house would you live in and why?

All of the houses in your book are from different periods in time. Have a look. Imagine what they would be like inside and what it would be like to live there. Then, decide which house you would choose to live in and explain why you have chosen this.

Talk Time homework encourages discussion at the dinner table but please write a couple of notes explaining your choice to help you when we discuss the subject in class.

Time Travel – A stroll around the houses

Posted on Thursday 22 January 2015 by Mr Roundtree

Our new Big Topic is Time Travel. Year 1 and 2 are focussing on houses through time. To kick off, we’ve all gone for a walk to see what the houses around us look like today. There are lots of different houses all around the small area near school so just imagine how many different styles we’ll see across thousands of years.

We had to be careful as the streets have been very slippery this week.

We saw detached houses, semi-detached house, bungalows and flats all in our mile long walk! I wonder what different houses we’ll see as we travel through time?

What can you make out of the rubbish (recycling) in your house?

What a great response to this week’s homework! I’ve seen lots of amazing work in books as well as models we brought into school. Here are some things we created…

This week’s homework is creative homework.  Apologies that this homework has been posted later than normal – because of this, it is not expected to be handed in until Thursday 22 January.

Do all the things in my kitchen cupboards weigh the same?

This homework is creative but is reinforcing some learning that has happened in Maths.  After looking at measuring mass (weight) this week, it will be interesting for the children to look in their kitchen cupboards and look at the weights of different products.  This could be presented in a variety of ways:

  • photos with labels showing mass
  • drawings with labels showing mass
  • comparisons of different products and their masses
  • pictures / photos of products that do weigh the same
  • photos of children cooking something and weighing the ingredients

Our new neighbours

Posted on Tuesday 20 January 2015 by Mr Roundtree

Some of you may know that, here at Moortown Primary School, we’ll soon have new neighbours. The building next door, which used to be Search Laboratories, is soon to become a nursery and a pre-school and after school care provider. Whilst we don’t endorse one provider over another, we thought you might like to hear more about this news as it’s so local to our school. Here’s a message from the new owners:

Hello there. I’m Helen Gration and I’m honoured to have gained planning permission to open the ‘Moortown Montessori Nursery’ next to your outstanding school.

Our passion for supporting children in their early years reflects the same values that have right here in your school – high-quality care, outstanding education, and staff with some of the best hearts in childcare. Our nursery will be open 7.30am – 6.30pm and there’ll be an out-of-school service for those who need it too. We already have two children’s nurseries in York where we have gained ‘outstanding’ judgements from Ofsted and we’ll be bringing those values with us.

Work on the Old Chapel next door will start very soon and we’re heading for an opening for the Summer term. We’ll keep you posted but, if you’ve any questions, you can email us on leedsmontnurtury@aol.co.uk. We look forward to seeing you in the neighbourhood!
