Party Time

Posted on Thursday 18 December 2014 by Mrs Weekes

The party season has now officially started! Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 danced and jigged their way through the afternoon with a few games thrown in. It was a great way to finish off the term – looking forward to non-uniform day tomorrow with lots of fun things planned. Here are a few photos of the fun and games this afternoon.
Happy Christmas everyone.

Happy Christmas!

Hello all! Autumn Term is at an end and we’re off to enjoy our festive holidays. Just a quick note to say well done to the children for this term. They’ve had an excellent attitude to learning meaning that we’ve been able to do all sorts of fun learning. We’ve travelled the globe in our ‘Where in the World’ mini-topic; taken a journey through art in ‘Katie and…’ big topic; and become enquiring scientists through ‘What’s the Matter?’. Rounding off our term was the fabulous production of Baubles which we all hope you enjoyed.

One last round of applause for all of the Year 2s…

THE SHEEP

THE TEACHERS

THE NARRATORS

THE TOWNSPEOPLE, INNKEEPERS, MARY AND JOSEPH

THE ANGEL

THE CHILDREN

and, of course… MR POTTS

Thank you for your support this term, have a lovely holiday and, from all of us…

Peshawar, Pakistan

Posted on Wednesday 17 December 2014 by Mr Roundtree

The Lord Mayor of Leeds will lead a one minute silence tomorrow to show support for those affected by this week’s tragic events in Pakistan. The event will take place in front of Leeds Art Gallery tomorrow at 11.00am and will be attended by elected members, city partners, multi-faith leaders and community representatives.

Members of the public are invited to attend and join the one minute silence, which has been organised to mourn the deaths of more than 140 people, including at least 132 children, at a school in Peshawar on Tuesday.

Lord Mayor of Leeds councillor David Congreve said: “People in Leeds and across the world have been deeply moved by the reports and images we have seen following these appalling events. It is fitting that as a city that promotes diversity, tolerance and peace, we gather to pay our respects to those who have had their lives cut so tragically short and I would invite the public to attend and show their support.”

Equally, as a school which promotes diversity, tolerance and peace, we will also gather to pay our respects at 11.00am tomorrow.

Amazing learning!

At the end of the first term in Year 1, it seems appropriate to say well done to all of the children for the fantastic start to Key Stage 1 they have had.  We have been regularly surprised by contributions to learning and have said “wow” several times when we have seen what children are achieving.  We could mention everyone separately so would just like to say well done to everyone and wish you and your family best wishes for the approaching holiday.

Here are some brilliant examples of homework from last week which show how much support parents are giving.  Thank you –  it makes our job easier when we know learning is continuing at home.

Cross country

Posted on Monday 15 December 2014 by Mrs Taylor

Recently some pupils from Key Stage 2 took part in the Leeds North East School Sports Partnership KS2 cross-country festival at Cardinal Heenan.  Here is a report from the event.

‘On Monday, I was really excited to go to the cross country. It was time for my race. My friend stood next to me.  Just then, the whistle blew.  I ran as fast as my legs could take me!  I slowed down but didn’t stand still.  I was near the back but that didn’t stop me.  Nothing could get in my way and I caught up with some others.  I sprinted to the end and passed a few people as I crossed the finish line.  My smile was from ear to ear.  I wasn’t near the front but I wasn’t the last.  Everyone cheered and patted me on the back.  I felt like I was first.’

Well done to all the children who took part.

Merry Christmas!

We’re reaching the end of your child’s first term in Reception.  We’ve loved seeing all the children gain confidence and make progress in their learning…

  • Well done, Sakina and Leo, for your terrific handwriting.
  • We’re really happy to see the increased confidence of Ethan, Jasraj and Rayn.
  • Well done, Pollyanna: we’ve enjoyed watching you design and create amazing models and drawings.
  • We’ve all enjoyed Noah’s enthusiasm for learning.
  • Well done, Henka and Kashif, for making wise choices.
  • Will and Albie have kept us amused with their great sense of humour.
  • Hifza, Musa, Jessica and Olivia have shown concern and care for their friends.
  • We’re all impressed with Taha for eating healthier foods at lunchtime.
  • Well done to Felix, Harris, Raima and Jemima for great learning in maths and to Phoebe, Liam, Emma, Emily and Sami for their progress in reading.
  • Thank you, Safiya-Mishal and Yusayrah, for helping everyone in the class.

This week’s homework is practice makes perfect.  Please make sure it is handed in by Wednesday 17 December.

The homework is maths and is making sure that the children recognise words in numbers and digits.

There won’t be any homework during the Christmas break but don’t forget about Mathletics and writing thank you letters to keep up those key skills.

Happy Christmas, everyone; thanks for your support this term.

Christmas Party

Posted on Friday 12 December 2014 by Mrs Weekes

It’s that time of year again when we get our party dresses out and our posh trousers on and dance the afternoon away at the Christmas party!

KS1 and Reception will be having their Christmas party on Thursday 18 December in the afternoon.  Your child can bring their party dresses and/or posh trousers (and anything else they want to wear) in a named bag so that they can get changed at lunchtime.  Please make sure that all children come to school in their uniform as normal.  You may think that they will not be able to get ready themselves – believe me, they can.  However, there will be help at hand for zips, tights and any other difficult item!

Please do not send any food – there will be a party snack provided.

Thank you.

The homework this week is Practice Makes Perfect and is due in on Wednesday 17 December.

I understand and can write passive sentences.

Children have a sheet in their homework book which asks them to complete a passive sentence using a passive verb. To further challenge them, you could ask them to convert some of last week’s active sentences into passive sentences.

An example of each:

  • Year 5 won the Cool Class Cup. (This is active – we know the ‘subject’ of the sentence – which is Year 5 – and what they did – they won the cup.)
  • The Cool Class Cup was stolen. (This is passive – something was done to the cup, but we don’t know who by.)

It’s Christmas…

…so teachers are not giving new lists of spellings to learn this week.

If your child didn’t do so well in the Spellathon, please make sure (s)he keeps learning the spellings that you teacher has set this term.

The Department for Education has set out a list of 100 words which children in Y3,4 should know, and a further 100 words for children in Y5,6.  If you’d like to give your child a head-start, you might like to support your child in learning some of these.  The lists can be found on page 54 and page 61 of this document.

(This list is new for 2014; teachers have begun to include the words in their spelling lists.)
