Amazing attendance!

Posted on Tuesday 22 July 2014 by Mr Roundtree

Thank you to all parents / carers (and children) who have supported us this year: we are proud to have the highest attendance rate for the last 7+ years (the best since I’ve been headteacher).

The school total is 97.3%.  Here is the class breakdown:

Reception: 96.1% – a high figure for Reception, where children tend to be less resilient to illnesses

  • Year 1: 97.2%
  • Year 2: 98.2% – the highest figure here, so special well done to all!
  • Year 3: 97.5%
  • Year 4: 97.1%
  • Year 5: 97.4%
  • Year 6: 97.4%

Leeds and national figures for the last four years have also improved.  In 2010-11, national attendance was at 94.4% and this year it’s at 96.3%.  Our attendance used to be lower than nationally.  It’s a terrific achievement that our attendance is now higher.

The end of a brilliant year!

Posted on Monday 21 July 2014 by Mr Roundtree

Wow! What a fantastic year this has been. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first year at Moortown and it’s due to the children in Year 2. We’ve learnt so much and everyone is leaving Year 2 as more enthusiastic, mature young learners. I’m particularly pleased with how our behaviour has improved and expect to see this good work continue in Year 3. Good luck everyone. Enjoy your Summer!

An Ode to Year 2

Never will your smile be fuller,

than when with Danny and Abdullah.

All great kids, but to name a few,

Pohnum, Nishaan and Matthew.

Always a smile with a great big gleam,

from Aleena, Pavan, Elias, Saleem.

Megan, Hibba and good old Stan,

will help you out where ever they can.

Noah, Owen, Zeewa and Nieve,

have grown so much before they leave.

Never will there be a sad face

when with Archie, Enya, Harry or Grace.

This class you’ll find are always ‘chippa’

Matteo, Umaimah, Edward and Pippa.

Try their best, they always can,

Nico, Brandon, Hibba and Sam.

Olly and Issy have learnt so much,

Year 2…

Roundhay Park Treasure Hunt

Posted on Friday 18 July 2014 by Mr Wilks

Yesterday, we went on our treasure hunt to Roundhay Park. It was a brilliant day (my favourite of the whole year) and the children were brilliant. All the hunters did a great job finding the clues and then overcoming the challenges before finally finding the treasure. My favourite part was lunchtime where all sixty children sat, ate, drank and chatted to each other more harmoniously than sixty adults ever could!

Unfortunately, I’ve only got a few photos – I was so busy enjoying the day, I totally forgot to get my camera out!

Moortown field / proposed park

Posted on Friday 18 July 2014 by Mr Roundtree

A message from Janice Rush, Chair of Governors:

Dear parents / carers

I write to inform you of the most recent news regarding the former Yorkshire Bank sports ground.

A meeting was held on Tuesday 15th July between the school, representatives of Leeds City Council Parks & Countryside department, representatives of Moortown Community Group, local councillors and the developers.

Agreement was reached that a small piece of land behind the school and extending towards Shadwell Lane would be given for exclusive use of the school – the rest would become a public park. Although probably not big enough for large sporting events like Sports day, the land will be for outdoor play and learning activities and will not be able to be built on.

The school will be responsible for fencing, landscaping and maintaining this area. Initially we need to find at least £16,000 to fence the perimeter. Local councillors have very kindly donated £5,000 from funding they have available, meaning we have to raise £11,000 – so have a look down the back of the sofa and see what you can find (!).

The PTA will be looking for grants over the summer and will begin fundraising next term; if you have ideas, please get in touch with them.

Regards

Janice Rush, Chair of Governors

The final week of spellings is a combination of ible and able words. Children will be tested on eight words from the previous two lists. They will need to revisit both sets of words and ensure they listen carefully to determine whether it is an ible or an able word.

Road Safety

Posted on Friday 11 July 2014 by Mr Wilks

This morning, Howard came into class to talk about road safety. We focused on the importance of wearing seat belts whenever we go in a car.

Some key points:

1. Always wear a seatbelt
2. If you are under 135cm tall, you should use a booster seat
3. Never share a seatbelt with another person
4. Never sit on someone’s knee when in a car
5. Never travel in the boot of a car
6. Always wear a seatbelt
7. ALWAYS WEAR A SEATBELT!

D:Side

Posted on Friday 11 July 2014 by Mr Wilks

This morning, Michelle from d:Side came into class to chat to the children about the dangers of smoking.

20140711-092833.jpg

Michelle told us that there are over 4,000 different chemicals in a cigarette as well as an addictive drug called nicotine -euuurrrrggghh! The picture below shows some of the other products in which chemicals from cigarettes can be found.

When you smoke, tar builds up in your lungs. The picture below shows you the amount of tar which would be produced by one person smoking for a year.

Did you know that a pack of cigarettes costs at least £5?! Some smokers smoke a pack everyday. That’s £35 a week or £1,825 a year! You could go on holiday for that!

This week’s whole school homework is creative following our themed week, Staying Safe.  It should be returned by Wednesday 16 July.

I know how to stay safe.

Throughout this week, a variety of visitors have worked with classes to deliver key learning about different aspects of safety.  These include:

  • water safety (lifeguard – Mr Glass and RNLI)
  • scooter training (Mrs Strange)
  • bike maintenance (Edinburgh bicycle cooperative)
  • skateboarding (sk8 safe)
  • trampolining (Roundhay high school)
  • food/kitchen safety (school kitchen)
  • first aid (British Red Cross)
  • e-safety (One day creative)
  • road safety (Leeds City Council)
  • drug education (dside)
  • safety within engineering (Mr McDermott)
  • bike security (police)

Alongside these external visitors, children have been learning other aspects of safety within their class.

The creative homework is a great opportunity for your child to demonstrate their learning from this week. They could:

  • write a poem
  • produce a quiz
  • create a comic strip
  • produce an information leaflet
  • create a crossword
  • …or anything else they can think of.

Staying safe in sport

Posted on Thursday 10 July 2014 by Mr Roundtree

Year 2 went to Roundhay School on Tuesday to use their sporting facilities and learn how to be safe on a trampoline. We all had a great time bouncing and learnt some new tricks along the way.
