The homework this week is practice makes perfect and is due in on Wednesday 15 January.

I can write an algorithm to solve a problem.

As we have been learning about computing in our mini-topic, we thought it would be a good idea to practise our programming skills by writing an algorithm to solve a problem. An algorithm is a set of instructions designed to solve a problem or perform a specific task. Computer programs use algorithms to carry out different functions. However, for this homework, we won’t be needing any digital devices!

Stuck in the children’s books is a 5×5 grid with a start and finish point on it. The children have to write an algorithm (set of instructions) to guide a sprite (a computer graphic – but for this you could use a coin or a counter with an arrow marked on it) from the start to the end point. Their algorithms should contain the following vocabulary: forward, 90 degrees, clockwise, anti-clockwise.

Computer programmers strive to write the simplest algorithms so children should be encouraged to find a route with the fewest steps possible.

Once they’ve finished this, they could write another algorithm to guide a family member from one part of the home to another.

Please drop in to see me if you have any questions!

We’re kicking off with practice makes perfect this week, focusing on the skills we have learnt in our maths lessons.

I can use my number skills.

Work through the tasks in your homework book to partition, sort and round numbers. Remember what we’ve learnt this week!

Holidays!

Posted on Monday 23 December 2013 by Mr Wilks

Wow! This term has absolutely flown by. I’ve been so impressed by the progress that the children have made this term and by their enthusiasm for learning.

We’ve been so busy this term. Our big topic was great fun and the highlight, for me, were the brilliant houses we created in DT lessons! In literacy we’ve been writing stories, promotions, recounts and poetry. Within this, we’ve explored how authors create mood. In maths, we’ve developed our calculations strategies, learnt about shape and measures, fractions and practised telling the time.

There are some children who have really stood out this term and deserve a special mention:

Isabelle and Kostas have both made fabulous progress in their writing this term.

Naran and Dominic have really impressed me with their mental maths skills.

Ava and Luke have really impressed me with their expressive reading.

Mia has made super progress in all subjects.

Finally, thanks to Mrs Sherriff and Mrs Smithells for all their hard work this term.

Have a super holiday and a happy new year!

Well done!

Well done to all of Year 2 for their hard work this term. It’s been very busy with Enterprise week, a school trip, the Christmas fair and, of course, the Christmas production!

I hope you all have a very lovely holiday and a well-earned rest. (I certainly will be!) I look forward to seeing everyone fresh-faced in January.

Merry Christmas!

Phew… time for a rest!

We’re not surprised that Year 1 are looking wan and tired! They have put a lot of effort into their learning and as a result they are making excellent progress.

Here are some of the highlights of the term:

  • Welcome to Zia; you have settled really well and have made lots of friends.
  • Well done to Josh, Gabby, Lori, Nicky, Lewis and Filip for making great progress in writing.
  • Pia, Mia, Martha and Humairah have shown great social skills and show that they understand others.
  • The maths mega-stars this term are: Farai, Ripley and Alex. We’re looking forward to see what you have in store for next term.
  • Ben, Isaac, Thomas and Kai: we feel that our own general knowledge is much better with your contributions to class discussions.
  • Well done to Theo and Isaiah for always trying hard in phonics lessons and improving their spelling scores.
  • Sachpreet, Manpreet and Noorpreet are making excellent progress in all areas and are showing excellent social skills.
  • Grace, Ethan, Ishaan, Ismail, Albert and Phoebe are showing that they are becoming independent learners and are demonstrating excellent learning behaviour.
  • Finally, thank you to Dylan who has come in with a smile every day and shown great progress in speaking and listening.

We hope that you and your families have a wonderful Christmas break and we ‘ll see you in January for lots more learning.
