Football tournament at Leeds Grammar School

Posted on Sunday 10 March 2013 by

Hi Lucas,

I’m really gutted you missed the football tournament on Saturday because you were poorly (I hope you’re feeling better for Monday!). I just thought I’d let you know what went on as we all had a fab day out!

On Saturday morning, we all met on the playing fields at Leeds Grammar School. I was a little bit anxious and I think the others were too. It was great to see all the parents there but that added to me feeling a bit tense. Our first game was against Leeds Grammar School (gulp!) which didn’t help my nerves.

I’m afraid to say that within a few minutes we were already 3-0 down. However, after our nerves settled we started to play with confidence. Farhaan was giving it all his energy – I don’t think he stopped running all game! Mustafah was his usual calm self and was holding the ball up easily. All parents were in full voice and I could feel the energy beginning to rise. All of a sudden, the ball broke free in midfield. Josh stormed down the wing, skipping past a few players. Now, all the adults were screaming. With all his might, Josh fired the ball into the top corner. The keeper, who didn’t stand a chance of stopping the ball, stood motionless in the goal. The crowd roared! Moortown Primary had arrived!

Our third game was against Immaculate Heart. Spurred on by the crowd, Moortown Primary began to play more and more like a team. You would have been so proud if you saw them, Lucas. Fluid passing between Callum, Billy and Luca meant that opponents were regularly chasing shadows. We were still under pressure but we had our special weapon – Harris. I can only describe his goalkeeping as the best I’d ever seen. In the end, we drew the match after a very dubious penalty that we conceded. Here’s a picture of the action during that game:

Our final match was against Richmond House. We were tired and cold – it had started to snow! However, if you could have seen the determination on Harvey’s face you would have not known we had played five games. We kicked off and for the first time that day we went ahead. Evan scored one of the best goals I’ve ever seen a child score! He danced around two defenders and sent his left foot through the middle of the ball and saw it fly past the keeper into the bottom right-hand corner. He ran away with his hand held high screaming at the top of his voice! We still had a long way to go but some excellent tackling from Theo meant that we held onto our lead. Before you knew it, we were 3-0 ahead! Umar and Alex made sure we held onto that lead. We conceded two goals in the end but we still won after a nail-biting final few minutes.

So there you have it, Lucas. We had a  fantastic day out which ended on a high. Don’t worry though; there’s talk of playing more football tournaments in the future. Evan’s Dad also recorded some of the games so I’ll show you them when I get them.

Hope you get better soon,

Mr Redfearn

Learning about addition in Reception

Posted on Sunday 10 March 2013 by Mrs Wood

There are two types of addition situations that children will encounter in Reception.

The first is combining – where two sets are put together to make a new set. Here, the statement ‘I wonder how many there are altogether?’ is appropriate.

The second is counting up, where an original amount is increased resulting in a new total. In counting up it is useful if children can recognise a small number of items without counting.

Children need lots of practical addition opportunities before they are introduced to the formal addition sign. You can help at home by playing board games which involve counting on and providing lots of practical opportunities for addition.

Thank you to all who volunteered to read to the children.

Polling station opens early

Posted on Sunday 10 March 2013 by Mrs Weekes

As you know Moortown Primary is used for a polling station in May. Tradition was broken this week when we became a polling station on a Thursday in March; the councillors being elected were not from the local government but from each class in school. Well done to all those children who prepared and made speeches and congratulations to those who were elected.
