I can write instructions.

Think of an activity such as:

  • Brushing your teeth
  • Making a sandwich
  • Baking a cake

Write instructions to show how to make, play or do something. Remember that instructions could have:

  • Lists (What you will need)
  • Time connectives (First, wash your hands.)
  • Bossy verbs (First, wash your hands.)
  • Adverbs (First, wash your hands properly.)

Building!

Posted on Sunday 09 December 2012 by Mrs Wood

There was great excitement this week when our new building blocks arrived. We definitely have some budding engineers in our class! Take a look at some of the fantastic construction that went on.

Block play is beneficial in Reception for a variety of reasons including:

  • exploring mathematical concepts such as shape, size, length, weight and symmetry.
  • investigating science concepts, including gravity, balance, stability and cause and effect.
  • language and vocabulary are increased.
  • children’s confidence in decision making is enhanced.
  • coordination develops so eyes and hands and small and large muscles work together. This prepares children for success in reading and writing.

And of course, it’s fun!

This week’s spellings are words which use igh.

Talk with your child about the sound it makes (usually a long vowel sound which is the same or similar to the letter name of the vowel ‘i’), and see if they can think of more words like this at home.

Can your child put these words into sentences?

These words will be tested on Friday 14 December.

high
night
light
right
might
sight
bright
fight

There are two different homeworks this week. Look in your homework book to see which one you are doing. You might be practising using proper nouns or practising interpreting the information in pictograms.

If you have any questions, please come and see me.

This week’s homework is slightly different as it’s Practice makes Perfect.

I know the difference between no and know.

I want your child to be able to distinguish between no and know. In the children’s writing this week, some have struggled with writing the correct homophone.

Here are a couple of activities that you can do to test whether your child knows the difference:

  • Write no on a piece of paper and on the back write know. Then, read out a sentence and they have to show you whether they need to use no or know.
  • Write a sentence and leave a gap in the middle for your child to place either no or know.

The children don’t have to write anything in their books, but they will be tested on iPads on Friday 14 December.

At Moortown Primary, we work closely with other companies to enhance our curriculum.

This week, we’ve been delighted to welcome Theatre in Education back in to school to work with Y6 children.  Theatre in Education are great: they produce and perform quality drama which they then follow up with workshops which develop the personal and social awareness and understanding of our pupils.  This week, they’ve performed ‘One of Fagin’s Boys’.  Iona, one of our Y6 pupils, commented, “I think Fagin’s Boys was imaginitive although some of it was hard to understand. Also, I liked it because it was telling us what the life of a child in care might be like.”

We’ve also welcomed Yoga Bugs in to school.  They’ve worked with some of our classes – check out the pics in Y3 Class News for example.  YogaBugs are always popular visitors to school – they develop children’s physical and emotional health through yoga-inspired activity.  They bring stories to life through specially developed moves which combine fun with exercise: children go on wild adventures where they may roar like a lion, fly like a bird or blast into outer space!  Isabelle, who is in Y3, said, “I think it really calms you down and stretches your body.”

We’d also like to thank Leeds Festival Wind Quintet.  Recently, they played at the ceremony for turning on Moortown’s Christmas Lights.  They’ve since made a donation to school to spend on music – a very kind and thoughtful gesture.

Great partnerships!
