Our bottle top collection

Posted on Thursday 17 September 2015 by Mr Roundtree

Shaun Tan, the main character and author of our topic book ‘The Lost Thing’, spends his time collecting bottle tops. He kindly shared with us a picture of his collection at the front of his book. He’s managed to collect a whole range of weird and wonderful designs so we decided to create a collection of our own to rival his.

Grammar, punctuation and spelling

Posted on Tuesday 08 September 2015 by Mr Roundtree

The last news post about reading offered you lots of different ways to support your child’s reading. Here are some more ways to help your child whilst reading; these are more related to helping your child’s understanding of grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Word

  • What does … mean?  Can you think of another word that means the same/similar?
  • Which word tells you that… ?
  • Which word describes… ?
  • Find two verbs / adjectives / adverbs on this page.
  • Pick a descriptive word from the text, write it down and, using a thesaurus, write down five synonyms (different words with almost identical or similar meanings) and antonyms (words of opposite meaning) for that word.
  • Write down any words you had difficulty reading.
  • Write down any words that you don’t know the meaning of, then find them in a dictionary and write the meaning.

Phonics

  • Can you write a list of other words with the ‘oo’ sound in (or choose a different sound, depending on sounds in book).
  • Using one or two words from this list, write your own sentence.
  • Can you find these sounds in another book?
  • How many words can you find on this page beginning with ‘c’ or ‘br’ or ending in ‘ck’ (again, choose a letter string that is appropriate – think about what spellings your child has recently been learning).
  • Play ‘I spy’ with words that begin with ‘br’, ‘cl’, ‘dr’ for example.

Punctuation

  • Can you find the speech marks, exclamation marks, question marks, full, stops, commas?
  • Can you write some sentences using some of the above punctuation?

Into the woods….

Posted on Friday 26 June 2015 by Mrs Weekes

Yesterday, we went for a walk to the top of Shadwell Lane and found a little woodland area.  We spent an hour looking at the different trees, finding different leaves and sketching.  We’re so lucky that we can find an area like this so close to school.

19 June 2015

Posted on Sunday 21 June 2015 by Mr Roundtree

This week’s homework is creative and is due on Wednesday 24 June 2015.

I can show what grows around me.

Get out and about, either into your garden or walking through the streets and parks, to see what plants you can see.

  • Are there flowers, trees, fruit or vegetables growing in the world around you?
  • Which can you name and which can you not?
  • Are there any plants you see over and over again?

Show us in any way you like what grows around you.

Maybe you want to…

  • Draw pictures.
  • Take photographs.
  • Create an information booklet.
  • Film walking around and noticing plants around you.
  • Describe the plants you find.
  • Make a quiz to see if others can name what you see.

Butterflies!

Last week we said goodbye to our five Painted Lady butterflies. Some children have reported seeing them in their gardens!

Moortown botanists

Posted on Tuesday 09 June 2015 by Mr Roundtree

Lab coats went on yesterday as we all turned into botanists. It was time to find out once and for what plants need to grow so we set up an experiment. We planted the same seed and gave it different conditions to see which would grow and which would not.

Here are the conditions we set up:

  • soil, water, light, warmth, air
  • no soil, water, light, warmth, air
  • soil, no water, light, warmth, air
  • soil, water, no light, warmth, air
  • soil, water, light, cold place, air
  • soil, water, light, warmth, no air
We made a prediction as to whether we thought our plant would grow and why. Which do you think will grow and why do you think that?

SEAL Changes and manners

Posted on Monday 01 June 2015 by Mrs Taylor

As we enter our final half term, the next SEAL theme looks at Changes, starting from next week.

This week, we begin with a focus on manners and  I cover my mouth (when I cough, sneeze or yawn) is our weekly statement.

The ‘Vampire method’ can help to prevent germs spreading. By coughing or sneezing into our elbow, germs are not spread into the air or on our hands which may contaminate other things.

Here is how it’s done.

Don’t forget to ‘use your sleeve to cough and sneeze’.
