All week, we’ve been going through the Year 5/6 spelling list identifying which words we think we already know.

For this week’s spelling activity, the children should practise those spellings they already know by writing them into sentences as well as identifying ten words which they feel they’ll struggle to remember.

There won’t be a test on Friday; instead we’ll discuss the words we’ve identified as trickier and create a spelling list for us to learn the following week.

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework focuses on our SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) skills.

Have a go at the mini test at home before we go through it together in class on Thursday 19 January.

Check your own understanding by seeing if you can explain your answer to somebody else in your family, letting them know the tricks you’ve got for remembering what’s what. To make sure this impacts on your learning, notice what you’re confident with and what you might need to practise so that we can discuss this in class and you know yourself what to work on.

Scholes swimming pool

The Save Scholes Pool team has won a £10,000 Aviva grant.

Way back in October (21.10.16), we invited you support the efforts of parents and carers at Scholes (Elmet) Primary, one of our Sphere Federation partner schools.

The school is very unusual in that it has its own swimming pool. It’s a small, shallow one, but is great for introducing younger children to swimming. The pool has been closed for essential maintenance and a massive fundraising campaign has taken place. We encouraged you to vote for the school to benefit from a grant.

I’m delighted to tell you that the Save Scholes Pool team has won an Aviva Community Fund grant out of the thousands of entries that were submitted. The application made it to the final stage and eventually won £10,000!

This takes the total amount raised to £45,ooo which is the core amount that the Save Scholes Pool team set out to achieve 16 months ago. They’ve now got their fingers crossed for more good news that could take the funds to the £50k total.

Thinking about our next Big Topic

In preparation for our upcoming Big Topic, we put our heads together to think about what we’d like to learn and do. The next Big Topic will be Time Travel and Year 5 and 6 will be exploring entertainment through the ages.

There were hundreds of great ideas which Mr Catherall and I now need to seive through but here are a few to give you a taster:

  • create a marble run using woodwork skills
  • learn some ballroom dancing
  • create our games using our computing skills
  • write a promotional text for a game
  • work out the costing and profit for putting on a theatre production

We look forward to starting this topic in the week beginning 16 January and will keep you updated on what we’re doing.

This week’s spellings focus on the letter string, ‘ough’.

Ten of these spellings (or words in their word families, eg thorough and thoroughly) will be tested on Friday 13 January.

What forces are in action here?

We’ve been learning all about forces for our mini topic and, once we understood pushes, pulls, levers and pulleys, we created our own Rube Goldberg machines. The children worked in groups and planned and made their creations all from their own ideas once we’d explored and researched examples of them through the internet.

Here are a couple of our machines. Our first one had a little hiccup but we really liked their pulley at the end to raise the flag. The second was our most successful; they even managed to sound the buzzer! You’ll see just how excited we were that it worked.
