This week’s second homework is Talk Time.

I can discuss ways to make a fresh start.

Children should discuss the idea of making a fresh start and suggest ways to make one. Children should write notes to remind themselves of the conversation when we discuss this in class. Also, the person they discuss this with at home should sign their homework book.

This week’s Mathletics homework should be completed by Thursday 06 October.

Children have been assigned two tasks to complete:

Estimate sums

Estimation: add and subtract

Once again, if you experience any problems logging on to Mathletics please come and see me. If the problem cannot be resolved, children will be given time on a Wednesday lunchtime to complete the activities.

Eden Camp

Year 5 and 6 had an amazing day learning all about WW2 at Eden Camp today.

We learnt loads of new things and had a blast going back in time. We saw weapons, planes, medals, submarines and even experienced what it was like to be involved in the blitz!

Ask your child about their day and quiz them about all their learning. I wonder what their favourite parts of the day were?

Also, on behalf of all the staff, may I thank Mrs Gibbins and Mrs Sykes for volunteering to come along with us today – we wouldn’t have had enough adults to make the trip possible without parental help. Sure you had fun, too!

Spelling!

As always, we continue to place a huge emphasis on spelling in Year 5. We are currently focusing on words ending in ‘able‘ and ‘ible‘ – which are suffixes.

Spelling is a vital part of a writer’s toolkit; wivout acurate speling, reeders can strugle too make cents of hour ideas. Often, people accept that they are simply ‘a bad speller’. This is not the case as spelling can be improved like any skill in life.

It would be great if you could help at home by continuing to focus on helping your child learn their spellings well. In addition, discuss spelling as often as you can. When your child sees a new word ask them what spelling rule they can identify (or is the word an exception to the rule?).

Check out our spelling display in the picture below. Even better, discuss it with your child and answer the questions/fill in the blanks.

‘able’ and ‘ible’

This week’s spelling activity focuses on words ending in ‘able’ or ‘ible’ and recognising which suffix to use. This should be completed by Thursday 29 September.

Children should find words that end in either ‘able’ or ‘ible’ and begin to identify any patterns/rules they can see.

Children should present their findings in their homework books. We will discuss this in class and children will be given a word list to learn next week.

Our class novel is…

…’When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit‘.

Yesterday, we had a great first day of our new big topic all about a class novel.

First, to find out the name of our book we learnt all about Enigma machines and became code-breakers to decipher the title!

Then, we enjoyed reading the first chapter. As we read we answered questions and found out about some key terminology surrounding the Second World War. Ask your child about what they learnt!

In the afternoon, we ‘wondered’ about the artefacts in our room and looked at some of my Grandad’s medals/war memorabilia.

We’re all very excited about our big topic and we’ll keep you posted about all the learning we’ll be doing.

Maps!

This week, as part of our geography learning (Where in the world?) we learnt all about maps.

We thought about different types of maps and when we might use them. Then, we had chance to look at a range of OS maps for different regions around the UK. We learnt about contour lines, map symbols and identifying physical features. We also used a great online resource to aid our understanding (you can access this at home, too).

After lots of fun learning, then came the real challenge: learning how to fold our maps away correctly! I had agonised over how to teach this effectively but there was no need; turns out, Year 5 are much better at folding maps away than I am!

‘ough’ words

We have been focusing on learning how to spell (and say) words containing the ‘ough’ letter string.

Children should practise spelling these words in preparation for a test on Friday 23 September.

On the back page of every child’s homework book there is a sheet full of effective techniques to learn spellings. Children should be using these methods to ensure they learn how to spell these words effectively: for life, not just the test.
