This week’s homework is creative and is due on Thursday 22 September.

I can show what I know about the world we live in. 

This serves as a reflection on our recent mini-topic, ‘Where in the world?‘ In class, we discussed several ways in which children could respond. They could:

  • go for a walk using a map and make a short video-diary about how they used their map skills
  • identify physical and human geographical features in the local area
  • discuss Britain’s role in the world (we are small but influential… is that a good thing?)
  • create a song to help people remember key facts like continents, oceans, countries, counties and capitals.
  • make a weather report to show their knowledge of climates around the world

Plus many more. Last week, our homework was fantastic! Keep it up, Year 5!

Where in Europe?

As part of our Where in the World? mini-topic, we’ve been learning about Europe: its countries, cities, capitals and the many things to see!

To learn this, we planned an inter-railing trip around Europe. We imagined we were going in August and planned our journey using the official inter-railing map. They were some things we had to do:

  • visit eight places
  • go somewhere near a mountain range
  • go somewhere with a river
  • go somewhere hot
  • go somewhere cold

Once we’d planned our destinations, calculated our journey times and made sure we’d done all of the above, we used our research skills to find out what we could do in each place we visited.

Ask your child:

  • Where they chose to visit?
  • Why they chose there?
  • What could they do there?
  • Which country is______ in?
  • Is that city a capital city?

In a change to past practice, children will no longer be given a list of words to learn each week before being tested on the Friday. Instead, we will focus on the same spelling rule for two weeks. This will allow children more time to learn, and retain, the spellings. One week, children will be given a task or activity to complete. The next, they will be given a list of words that follow the rule.

This week’s spelling activity is due on THURSDAY 15 September 2016.

Sort these words according to the sound the ‘ough’ letter string makes when you say the word.

For example, when you say ‘enough’, the ‘ough’ letter string makes an ‘uff’ sound.

In Year 5 and 6, children receive two pieces of homework each week. This allows them more opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning outside of the classroom. Inside your child’s homework book is a parent/carer guide – it would be useful for you to have a quick read of this.

This week’s creative homework is due on THURSDAY 15 September.

I can show what makes a good learner. 

This is a great opportunity for us to think about what we can do in class to make us successful learners. In class, we discussed several ways in which children could respond creatively:

  • a board game
  • a video
  • a comic strip
  • a poster
  • a 3D piece of art
  • an interactive quiz

There are other ways, too. The key point is that children are able to show the characteristics of a good learner through a creative response. I can’t wait to see them.

Welcome to Year 5!

We’re two days in to the new school year now and are starting to settle in to our usual routines. We’ve discussed some expectations for the year and are ‘ramping-up’ our learning.

We’ve already learnt lots across a range of subjects and even visited our school library (check out the pictures below). Each child now has a library book that they can (and should) be reading at home. We’re keen at Moortown Primary to ensure all children have a love of reading – you, and your children, will hear me talk about this a lot over the year! As it stands, our library session is on a Tuesday so children should bring their library book on this day (although I have advised them to bring it every day in case we decide to have a spontaneous read).

We’ve enjoyed a fantastic first two days and I can’t wait to watch each child develop and progress over the coming year. Stay tuned to enjoy the journey with us.

Goodbye and good luck!

The end of the year is here! And what a year it’s been!

At the beginning of the year, we quickly came to realise that it would be a joy. Children have worked really hard and should feel really proud of what they’ve achieved. We’d like to share some of our thoughts about the successes in the class.

I’ve been particularly impressed with Ethan, Lennox and Bella’s writing this year. It’s been creative, well thought through and technically great. Brandon’s writing in recent months has also shown a great improvement. Keep it up! Similarly, Olli, Bailey, Yahya and Jenni‘s knowledge of grammar and punctuation has amazed us all year spot the squashed sentence, guys! Molly, Arran and Linda all made leaps and bound with their reading, finishing the year with great inference skills and a mature understanding of texts. Having identified spelling as something he wanted to work on, Archie made an enormous effort to improve. And it paid off – keep up the hard work, Archie.

In maths, Rav, Lanas, Henry, Ahmed, Jawaad, Zack and Rayhaan have stood out due to their resilience, problem-solving and overall improvement.

Despite being new to the country this year, Laurielyn and Gloria settled in quickly and became vital members of our class and school. Every adult in school has heard of their great attitudes to learning as well as their amazing progress. Great stuff!

ShahbanIbrahimSimran and Levon have grown in confidence over the year and, while quiet, have a great sense of humour and maturing attitude. Standing out for their relentless determination to improve this year are Pavan, Jaskirat, Jahneil and Sophia. Keep this up guys and you’ll go far… Tayshaun has improved well in all manner of different subjects. He’s kept us laughing throughout the year, too! Young Sam came to us a fresh-faced boy and leaves a new man – he’s more mature, has a great sense of humour and has learnt loads. Well done, Sam!

It’s been a real pleasure to get to know you all and we wish you the very best of luck at high school.

Final homework review

Yesterday, we had our final homework review of the year – we definitely saved the best ’till last!

There were lots of amazing pieces of creative homework responding to the statement: I can reflect on my time at primary school. 

We really enjoyed looking at each other’s reflections and it was amazing to see how we all remembered different things.

It was harder than usual to choose our favourites but here are some popular choices. Well done, everyone – they were all great!
