This week’s spellings are all individualised. Children have looked back through their test books and chosen ten words that they have previously spelled incorrectly. Each child has identified these words because they struggle to spell them or don’t feel confident when trying to use these words in their writing.

Children should learn their words in preparation for their final spelling test on Thursday 21 July.

This week’s creative homework should be returned on Wednesday 20 July.

I can reflect on my time in primary school.

Children should reflect on their time in primary school and respond creatively. They could focus on friends they have made, what they will miss about Moortown Primary, what they have learnt, how they have changed over the course of their time at school, why they are proud to have attended Moortown Primary and anything else they wish to mention.

This is the last piece of homework that children will complete at primary school – make it a good one!

For our Talk Time homework this week, we’re reflecting on this week’s SEAL sentence.

I can discuss strategies to deal with feelings to do with change. 

Think about effective strategies for coping with change and write some notes to help you discuss this in class.

Gobblefunk words

To promote the big read and celebrate the work of Roald Dahl, this week’s spellings are all words found in his books.

Children should learn how to spell these words in preparation for their final spelling test on Friday 15 July.

Although these are made-up words, your child be practising the skill of learning new words – a vital life skill. There are lots of rules in these words which apply to spelling real or made-up words. (‘Squibbling’, for example, is probably a verb, ‘to squibble’, and uses two key rules: ‘drop the e for i n g‘ and the always important ‘double up for short vowel sounds’.)

Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies

Rehearsals for our Year 5 and 6 production are now in full swing – well done to all those who have learnt their lines!

As of today, all children are aware of what they need for their costumes. Please could they bring their complete costumes, in a plastic bag with their name on, into school tomorrow.

On Friday, we have our dress rehearsal in front of the school. With this in mind, it is crucial that all children know all of their lines (and the lines that come before theirs). Knowing lines will help them to focus on fine-tuning their performance.

Some Year 6 children were not in school today (Eid Mubarak to those celebrating!); for their costumes they need:

  • Lanas: all black
  • Linda: opposite to Jenny
  • Ibrahim: all black
  • Shahban: white polo top, plain shorts
  • Ahmed: all black

Talk Time Homework Review

Last week, Year 6 were set a Talk Time homework about how people they know use maths every day. We reflected on this as a class and it was fascinating for us to discover that maths is everywhere. Here are some quotes from our discussion:

  • “When you are paying for parking it sometimes says ‘exact change only’. This means you need to estimate (or calculate) how long you will be there for and how much this will cost. You then need to count accurately to ensure you don’t waste any money.” – Jennifer
  • My dad needs to calculate the cost of materials before factoring in a margin for profit!” – Simran
  • My parents need to ensure they calculate the cost of VAT accurately so that they make enough money in the restaurant!” – Linda
  • My uncle needs to accurately calculate any profits or losses that his business makes!” – Yahya

Football Olympics @ Wigton Moor

Some of our Year 5 class had a great time playing in the Olympic Football Festival today. 

Things didn’t always go our way but everyone remained positive, focused and resilient. 

It was great to see high levels of sportsmanship and respect from our children throughout the day – well done! 

The highlight came in our last match as we swept aside the opposition 4-0 and the sun broke through the clouds!

Miss Hale, team manager for the day, summed up our efforts: “We fought valiantly throughout and spirits remained high. Despite some tough opposition, we still managed to win our final game. The sun even came out, too!”

This week’s spellings activity is to explore some common word families. Words we use every day but might not stop to think about.  Spellings will be tested on Friday 01 July.

Children will not be given a list to learn but should explore the following word families:
