Living and Learning: relationships

Posted on Thursday 17 December 2020 by Mrs Taylor

Our Living and Learning theme this term has been relationships. Year 1 have been learning about different aspects of relationships including families and those who care for us, caring friendships and respectful relationships.

The Family book by Todd Parr supported our learning about the importance of families and that families are sometimes different to their own families.

When learning about our special people, we discussed that, at the moment, we can’t always see some of these special friends and family. Despite this, we thought of different ways to show we care for them.

Finally, throughout this topic we have been learning about how to seek help if the children have a worry about any of their relationships. This has been through the concept of Start Telling Other People. The children have discussed who they might tell and this could include a friend, a family member, an adult at school or writing it in our Living and Learning box.

We hope this learning helps the class with their day to day relationships.

Year One Reenact The Great Fire of London.

Posted on Thursday 17 December 2020 by Mrs Freeman

To celebrate the end of our Great Fire of London topic, Year One  historians created their very own 1666 Tudor street. As the children placed their model houses in a line across the playground, they made sure there were no gaps between the buildings.

Ask your child why.

Then, it was time for the fire!

Ask your child where the fire began.

We watched in amazement as the flames spread from house to house. Every single building was destroyed!

Ask your child why the fire spread so quickly.

Then, we noticed a gap in the houses. The army used gunpowder to blow up some of the houses.

Ask your child why.

Ask your child what happened to the fire and what is this called.

We have been really impressed by the children’s enthusiasm and increasing knowledge about this important event in history.

Ask your child why history is important.

Well done, Year One!

Living and learning: RSE

Posted on Thursday 17 December 2020 by Miss Wilson

Over the last three weeks, we’ve been learning about RSE – relationships and sex education.

We’ve learnt about such a wide range of topics, from what happens during puberty to how to maintain healthy relationships with friends, family and others!

We’ve learnt that our emotions might change a lot but that nothing is permanent and we know how to help ourselves. Reading about inspirational people who have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions and hearing stories from members of our class really made us feel better. We’re all in this together!

We’ve covered a lot of science over the last three weeks and feel much more knowledgeable! Teamwork has also been a huge factor in what we’ve been doing, as has listening carefully and contributing thoughtfully.

“At first, I thought it’d be nerve-wracking but now I think it’s been so helpful because I know what might happen in future,” said Hifza.

“It’s been very helpful even if it was a bit strange at times!” laughed Joude.

Noah said, “It’s been very interesting learning about RSE. It’s really just learning how humans have survived and reproduced as a species.”

Spelling help!

Posted on Wednesday 16 December 2020 by Mr Wilks

Many children in the class had spelling as a target on their Learning Updates. Here’s some more information and lists of words to practice with your child.

Things you can do to help:

  1. Practise the spelling list which come home each week before the Friday test.
  2. Look back at lists from previous weeks and test your child on a few of these so that they’re revisiting the rules.
  3. Read lots. This exposure to words will have a positive effect on spelling.
  4. Keep talking about and practicing homophones. Click here for the lists.
  5. Be aware of the Y3,4 National Curriculum spelling lists. Many of these will be covered in the lists across Year 3 and 4 but it’s good to have them all in one place.
  6. Finally, we still have Lexia which helps with reading and spelling at KS2 as well as KS1.

Also, here is the Spelling Strategies document which gives you some different ways of practicing and learning spellings.
