‘Scoot the Route’ 26 – 30 September
Next week, we’ll be supporting Leeds City Council’s ‘Scoot the Route’ initiative to promote scooting to school to help reduce congestion at the school gates and encourage pupils to lead more healthy active lifestyles.
We will be running a competition throughout the week whereby children will be issued a ticket (below) at the gate if they come to school on their scooter. They need to complete the ticket and hand it in to the office. All tickets will then go in to a draw on Friday 30 September where children have the chance of winning one of five £10 Love2Shop vouchers.
Don’t forget you can park your scooter near the bike storage area using one of our new scooter storage pods.
It’s Gold again!
The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the mark based on participation in competitions, extra-curricular sporting activities, sports leadership and local club links.
Once again, we’re proud to receive a Gold award!
Thank you to all pupils, parents and staff who continue to have such enthusiasm for participation.
Maps!
This week, as part of our geography learning (Where in the world?) we learnt all about maps.
We thought about different types of maps and when we might use them. Then, we had chance to look at a range of OS maps for different regions around the UK. We learnt about contour lines, map symbols and identifying physical features. We also used a great online resource to aid our understanding (you can access this at home, too).
After lots of fun learning, then came the real challenge: learning how to fold our maps away correctly! I had agonised over how to teach this effectively but there was no need; turns out, Year 5 are much better at folding maps away than I am!
The reading bug is catching on!
Check out this picture of some members of our class enjoying their library books during break time. It’s great to see children choosing to read; reading regularly (and often with an adult) definitely improves learning!
Well done, guys!
PS Thanks for the picture, Mrs Valentine!
Brilliant balancing
This half term in PE, we’re focusing on balance and gymnastics. Today, working as part of a team, the children were asked to create a balance using different parts of their bodies and also try to incorporate a piece of equipment into their work. As you can see from the pictures, the children demonstrated some amazing balancing skills, super team work and some very bendy bodies!
Best of British themed menu
Catering Agency, our school meal provider, will be running a special themed menu on Thursday 06 October: Best of British Autumn Favourites. Please contact the office if your child would like a school dinner on this day.
MAPS!
One of my great loves in life is a good map so I’ve thoroughly enjoyed our topic lessons so far this week.
We’ve thought about what different maps there are in the world and why we use them. Our learning has then focused on OS maps, looking at what we can learn about an area just by looking at a map.
We found it most interesting looking at contour lines and what they tell us about the height of the land above sea level and where the land is steep or flat.
Next, we’re moving on to human geography to explore what our country is like and how different factors contributed to our success in the Olympics over the Summer.
Where in Europe?
As part of our Where in the World? mini-topic, we’ve been learning about Europe: its countries, cities, capitals and the many things to see!
To learn this, we planned an inter-railing trip around Europe. We imagined we were going in August and planned our journey using the official inter-railing map. They were some things we had to do:
- visit eight places
- go somewhere near a mountain range
- go somewhere with a river
- go somewhere hot
- go somewhere cold
Once we’d planned our destinations, calculated our journey times and made sure we’d done all of the above, we used our research skills to find out what we could do in each place we visited.
Ask your child:
- Where they chose to visit?
- Why they chose there?
- What could they do there?
- Which country is______ in?
- Is that city a capital city?
Here’s some pictures of us in the early stages of planning our trip of a lifetime…
A great start!
It’s been a hectic and productive week. The class have settled well into a routine and are showing such an enthusiasm for learning. I wanted to mention a few children in particular who have really stood out in various lessons.
- Dylan and Maja for superb team work in PE. They were able to show us some great balancing skills.
- Isaac, Amrit, Danny and Manpreet for super place value work. All were keen to take on a challenge. Also, for being a great ‘buddy’ to others to aid their learning.
- Josh for superb presentation in all his work.
- Ishaan for great SEAL skills.
- Finally, a huge welcome to Danny who has joined our class. Danny has settled well into his new school and has made a great start in all his learning.
Please note that PE is on Mondays and Thursdays. We have advised the children to bring their kits on a Monday and take them home on a Friday for a wash.
Once again, please feel free to pop in if you have any questions.
Welcome to Reception!
We’ve been busy preparing the classroom and now can’t wait for the children to start!
We’re looking forward to meeting you all again next week as your child begins this exciting chapter in their lives.
Please bring your child to school on the date and time arranged.
See you next week!
