Sunflower seeds: 1 week later

Posted on Monday 02 May 2016 by

A week after we planted our sunflower seeds, we could see some progress! We were super excited to see how things had changed.IMG_0671

We could see a shoot! Most of the pots had a shoot emerging from the soil, but not all…yet!

There was one pot which had stayed the same. The seed which has had no water has not changed. We wondered why.

We also have a seed in the fridge, a seed with no soil and a seed in the dark! We’ve made some predictions on which ones we think will be successful, but only time will tell! We’re really enjoying being scientists. You can help your little scientist develop at home by asking your child what they are learning about and investigating in science lessons. How much can they tell you about plants and our experiment?

Phonics mornings

Thank you all for attending the recent phonics mornings. We hope you have found these sessions useful.

Remember, please ask if you need further help with any aspect of your child’s learning.

Teamwork, concentration and coordination

Posted on Thursday 28 April 2016 by Mrs Taylor

Today some of our Year 1 and 2 children have taken part in the Key Stage 1 participation event as part of our partnership with Active Schools.  This is one of the ways we have invested our PE Premium.

Along with other Leeds schools the children enjoyed activities including tri-golf, cheerleading and Tagtiv8.

‘I loved the golf.’

‘Cheerleading was the best.’

‘We got to do cartwheels.’

Gymnastics

Posted on Tuesday 26 April 2016 by Mr Wilks

We’ve been working hard to improve our gymnastics skills in PE today. We’ve practised different types of balances, jumps and travels. We’ve also climbed, dangled and swung on the big gym apparatus.

I wonder…

Each week, Year 5 are donning their lab coats and goggles (metaphorically) and becoming scientists. Last week, we used our observation, questioning and planning skills with just water, skittles and a petri dish.

From such simple equipment, it was fascinating to see what happened and we took careful observations of what we could see.

Once we’d seen what happened, we had some question starters to help us to think about any questions we had as a result of this experiment.

From these question starters, we identified which questions could be researched and further our knowledge and which questions were testable. Focussing on the testable questions, as a group we chose something to test in next week’s science lesson:

What if you use use liquids other than water?

What if you use different sweets?

I wonder what would happen with different numbers of skittles?

We’ll be finding out what will happen by conducting these experiments on Friday 29 April so we’ll keep you updated.

Phonics mornings

Posted on Sunday 24 April 2016 by Mrs Wood

Our final phonics mornings of the year will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

It is really important that you attend to find out how your child has progressed and to learn more about how to support your child in the next phase of  their learning.

Phase 4
Children will continue to practise previously learned graphemes and phonemes and learn how to read and write:

CVCC words: tent, damp, toast, chimp

For example, in the word ‘toast’, t = consonant,  oa = vowel,  s = consonant,  t = consonant.

and CCVC words: swim, plum, sport, cream, spoon

For example, in the word ‘cream’, c = consonant, r = consonant, ea = vowel, m = consonant.

They will be learning more tricky words and continuing to read and write sentences together.
Tricky words
said, so, do, have, like, some, come, were, there, little, one, when, out, what

New topic: ‘Food’

Posted on Thursday 21 April 2016 by Mr Catherall

This week, we have started a new topic: ‘Food‘. Before the Easter holidays, every child in Year 6 suggested a topic they would like to explore. After creating a shortlist, the children voted and decided on ‘Food‘.

So far, we’ve focused on the geography of the food we eat: where some foods originate from; how they travel to our plates; and why some foods are imported while some are produced here in the UK.

We’re excited to explore this topic further and will keep you updated about all our food-related learning.

You can help at home by (amongst other things!):

  • discussing the origin of the foods you eat at home
  • looking at the food packaging together and making sense of some of the information you are given
  • discussing why some foods might be grown in specific countries
  • discussing how foods are advertised and how this might affect us as consumers
  • encouraging your child to think about the choices they make when choosing food to eat (are they healthy choices?)

Moortown PE kit

Has your child recently taken part in a sporting event wearing one of our Moortown polo tops?

If so, please could you ensure it is returned to the office asap to ensure we have all tops available for our next sporting events.
