Spelling!

As always, we continue to place a huge emphasis on spelling in Year 5. We are currently focusing on words ending in ‘able‘ and ‘ible‘ – which are suffixes.

Spelling is a vital part of a writer’s toolkit; wivout acurate speling, reeders can strugle too make cents of hour ideas. Often, people accept that they are simply ‘a bad speller’. This is not the case as spelling can be improved like any skill in life.

It would be great if you could help at home by continuing to focus on helping your child learn their spellings well. In addition, discuss spelling as often as you can. When your child sees a new word ask them what spelling rule they can identify (or is the word an exception to the rule?).

Check out our spelling display in the picture below. Even better, discuss it with your child and answer the questions/fill in the blanks.

Yorkshire’s Rio Heroes

Welcome back Yorkshire’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes with a special homecoming parade!  On Wednesday 28 September, a carnival atmosphere will take hold of Leeds as the athletes are welcomed home in true Yorkshire style.

A host of athletes have confirmed their attendance, including triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee; World, European and Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft, MBE; diver and gold medallist Jack Laugher; and rowers Andy Triggs Hodge and Paul Bennett who both claimed gold.

There will be a lively parade, with samba bands, brass bands, colourful performers and of course open top buses and vehicles carrying the athletes. Parade celebrations will start at 5.15pm, and we would love to see the people of Yorkshire come out in force to line the city centre route and cheer on these inspiring men and women.

 

 

Our class novel is…

…’When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit‘.

Yesterday, we had a great first day of our new big topic all about a class novel.

First, to find out the name of our book we learnt all about Enigma machines and became code-breakers to decipher the title!

Then, we enjoyed reading the first chapter. As we read we answered questions and found out about some key terminology surrounding the Second World War. Ask your child about what they learnt!

In the afternoon, we ‘wondered’ about the artefacts in our room and looked at some of my Grandad’s medals/war memorabilia.

We’re all very excited about our big topic and we’ll keep you posted about all the learning we’ll be doing.

Tuck shop returns

The KS2 fruit tuck shop returns tomorrow at playtime.

We’ve had a great response to our pre-payment option with 81 portions of fruit each week.

You can still pay on the day – 20p per portion.

‘Scoot the Route’ 26 – 30 September

Next week, we’ll be supporting Leeds City Council’s ‘Scoot the Route’ initiative to promote scooting to school to help reduce congestion at the school gates and encourage pupils to lead more healthy active lifestyles.

We will be running a competition throughout the week whereby children will be issued a ticket (below) at the gate if they come to school on their scooter.  They need to complete the ticket and hand it in to the office.  All tickets will then go in to a draw on Friday 30 September where children have the chance of winning one of five £10 Love2Shop vouchers.

It’s Gold again!

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.  Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the mark based on participation in competitions, extra-curricular sporting activities, sports leadership and local club links.

Once again, we’re proud to receive a Gold award!

Thank you to all pupils, parents and staff who continue to have such enthusiasm for participation.

Maps!

This week, as part of our geography learning (Where in the world?) we learnt all about maps.

We thought about different types of maps and when we might use them. Then, we had chance to look at a range of OS maps for different regions around the UK. We learnt about contour lines, map symbols and identifying physical features. We also used a great online resource to aid our understanding (you can access this at home, too).

After lots of fun learning, then came the real challenge: learning how to fold our maps away correctly! I had agonised over how to teach this effectively but there was no need; turns out, Year 5 are much better at folding maps away than I am!

The reading bug is catching on!

Check out this picture of some members of our class enjoying their library books during break time. It’s great to see children choosing to read; reading regularly (and often with an adult) definitely improves learning!

Best of British themed menu

Where in Europe?

As part of our Where in the World? mini-topic, we’ve been learning about Europe: its countries, cities, capitals and the many things to see!

To learn this, we planned an inter-railing trip around Europe. We imagined we were going in August and planned our journey using the official inter-railing map. They were some things we had to do:

  • visit eight places
  • go somewhere near a mountain range
  • go somewhere with a river
  • go somewhere hot
  • go somewhere cold

Once we’d planned our destinations, calculated our journey times and made sure we’d done all of the above, we used our research skills to find out what we could do in each place we visited.

Ask your child:

  • Where they chose to visit?
  • Why they chose there?
  • What could they do there?
  • Which country is______ in?
  • Is that city a capital city?
