This week’s spelling activity focuses on the spelling rule, double up for a short vowel sound.

The following double consonants are common in the English language: gg, ff, tt, ss, pp, ll, bb, dd.

How many words can you come up with that include these double consonants? Once you’ve got your list of words (at least 20), tick the ones that have a short vowel sound before the double consonant.

Next week, we will be looking at words which have an -il or     -al ending. These are much less frequent than the -le ending.

  • metal
  • pedal
  • capital
  • hospital
  • animal
  • pencil
  • nostril
  • fossil

The children will be tested on these words on Thursday 24th October 2019.

Following each weekly spelling test, the children are asked to spell random  words that have already been learnt. Often, we find that lots of spellings are correct for a test but soon forgotten.

This week’s spellings aim to help the children understand when to use different homophones. Practise using these spellings correctly in sentences and discuss ways to remember when to use which homophone – any good ideas you’ve got could be shared in class. There will be a test next week on Thursday 24 October.

Having received feedback from parents, Year 3 and 4 will have no more than 20 spellings across a two week period to practise at home. There will be a test every other week where ten of these spellings will be tested. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask.

Adding prefixes

This week’s spelling list is formed using words that can be altered by adding a prefix. Practise them using ideas from the fun spelling ideas information page at the back of your homework book. Say them aloud, write them down and use them in your own sentences. If you don’t know what any of the words mean, use a dictionary or alternative source to find out. As always, please come and see me before the deadline for help!
