20 May 2016
This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework is due on Wednesday 25 May.
To be able to use semi-colons in a list.
For many of Year 5, this is a new skill that we’re trying to become more confident with. The children have been given a sentence with a three part list in it. They should expand each part of the list adding description which may need extra commas (particularly if they’re using two adjectives). When re-writing their list with this extra detail, they’ll then need to use semi-colons to separate the parts in the list instead of commas and commas would just make the list confusing.
When I went out for tea, I had starters, mains and desserts.
When I went out for tea, I had delicious, puffy dough balls smothered in garlic butter; sumptuous steak which had been fabulously cooked and had crispy chips on the side; and a mouth-watering, rich chocolate pudding that oozed gooey caramel as you stuck your fork in it – yum!
I want the children to have a go at changing their lists so that they need semi-colons. Think about adding adjectives and using relative pronouns (which, that, when, who), ‘ing words and ‘ed words to add detail after the noun as well as before.
Money, Maths and Yoghurt
Today, we applied what we have been learning about money to real(ish) life. I was very exited to open my first ever shop – Mrs Wells’ Yoghurt Shop! The children had to choose three fruit toppings for their natural yoghurt and calculate how much this would cost.
Then, they had to collect the correct coins to give me – the shopkeeper – the exact amount.
Once they had handed over their money, the children could serve themselves and enjoy their tasty, fruity yoghurt!
Whilst we were enjoying our yoghurts, we thought about different ways to make 12p. Hifza’s yoghurt cost 12p and she paid with a 10p and a 2p, which was a sensible choice! However, we found that there were in fact lots of ways to pay 12p. Well done to Will and Harris who thought of some less obvious ways such as 5p +2p+2p+2p+1p.
Ask your child if paying with 6p+6p would be a possibility.
We Are Scientists
The sunflower plants are doing well! We are in week 4 now and there are some very obvious changes.
We worked as scientists by observing the plant and its changes, measuring the height of the plant and the length of the leaves and then recording this data. We wrote up a short report by thinking of a sentence first, writing it and then checking it. Here are some pictures of our Year 1 scientists.

20 May 2016
This week’s whole school homework is creative and is due Wednesday 25 May:
I understand rights and responsibilities.
This half term, our SEAL theme has been Rights and Responsibilities. We’ve been learning that if we have rights, we also have responsibilities. Children have been considering the following rights and responsibilities.
- I have the right to learn and I have the responsibility for my own learning.
- I have the right to play and I have the responsibility to play fairly.
- I have the right to express an opinion and I have the responsibility to respect the opinions of others.
- I have the right to be safe and I have the responsibility to make safe choices.
- I have the right to be healthy and I have the responsibility to make healthy choices.
Your child is required to show their understanding of rights and responsibilities in a creative way. Ideas could include:
- a story
- a poem
- a song
- a poster
- a letter
- a comic strip
- a script
Lights…Camera…Action
On our visit to the National Media Museum in Bradford, we had a great time enjoying and making films. A big highlight for all of us was the 3D IMAX film all about dinosaurs. Check us out all ready in our glasses…
We stood behind and in front of the camera in our TV production workshop, learning all about the different stages that are involved in bringing things to our screens at home.
And we also had time for a bit of fun in the Games Lounge (where we saw how technology has advanced over the years) and the Magic Factory (where we learned all about the role of mirrors in the history of film).
What a great day out!
More good news…
Mr Wilks and Mrs Valentine have been involved in some professional development for Science. As a result of this, an action plan from Moortown has been selected as a special merit award winner by the STEM centre (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). A cash prize will be used to improve Science teaching and learning.
As one of 60 winners, the action plan will be submitted into a shortlist to select the finalists. We’ll find out in July whether we have been chosen to win another £5000!
In the meantime, well done to Mr Wilks and Mrs Valentine.
School Saving Club
As part of our upcoming themed week, Money Matters, we’ll be setting up a School Saving Club, in partnership with Leeds City Credit Union.
There will be a parent information session on Wednesday 18 May, from 3pm-4pm, to find out more information and pick up an application form from Leasey Newton, Leeds City Credit Union.
As an extra incentive, children in Year 3 will receive £10 from Leeds City Council for opening an account.
During our Money Matters week, we’ll hold the first paying in session on Thursday 26 May from 3pm-4pm.
The Savings Club will then run on a monthly basis. The dates for this term are Wednesday 22 June from 3.15pm-4pm and Wednesday 20 July from 3.15pm-4pm.
Leeds City Credit Union First Savers account
Opening your child/children a First Savers Account is a fantastic way to help them to learn how to save and will teach them a skill they can use in the future. It has been proven that children who utilise a savings scheme within a school, watching their savings grow, continue to save throughout their adult lives.
There are no minimum requirements to this account and with each deposit, however small; your child will earn rewards to collect.
Leeds City Credit Union has introduced a new fun way for children to save and would like you to say hello to “The Potts Family”.
All children joining the savings club will be given an individual membership number and savings card. After every sixth deposit a sticker will be given. Each sticker represents a member of “The Potts Family”. When all the five stickers have been collected your child will receive a special badge of “Dolla” the dog.
Once the account is open, and your child reaches the signatory control age, the account will stay theirs to do as they wish, setting them up to continue saving throughout their adult life.
If you would like your child to join the Savings Club, please ask at the office for a First Savers application form, or come along to the parent information session on Wednesday 18 May from 3pm-4pm.
Do you have any old or foreign coins and bank notes?
If so, we will be launching a cash4coins PTA fundraiser during our Money Matters themed week.
Many people have some old foreign currency, either notes or coins and perhaps some old UK or Irish decimal coins.
We are collecting all worldwide current currency in notes or coins and any of the older currency such as the German Marks, Spanish Pesetas, old UK shillings, old UK decimal coins including Ireland, Channel Islands, Scotland, Isle of Man and £5/£2 coins.
We can turn your old money into a valuable donation.
Please donate at the school office.
Market research
This afternoon, we were ‘market researchers’ in preparation for our restaurant day on Friday (ask your child about this exciting learning).
Some of us went to Marks and Spencer’s and Cooplands to see which salads are available. Some of us carried out our market research here in school; either by asking adults or searching the Internet.
We then used our findings to decide on a salad that we will make (and sell – kind of) later in the week.
