14 October 2016
This week’s homework is Talk Time and will be discussed on Thursday 21 October.
You’re completing an independent project at the moment. Discuss what you’re doing at home and think about how it’s going, whether you’re enjoying it and how you could work more effectively.
We’ll then use this discussion to reflect on our independent learning in class.
14 October 2016
This week, we’re going to recap some old spelling rules which we learnt many years ago as people are making silly errors in their writing. Here are some key spelling rules. In your book, practise adding suffixes to words (and not just simple ones) and there will be a test next week. The example words below are not a spelling list; the words tested will require these rules to be applied. Remember, you need to think about how to spell the root word (eg hurry) before you then think about how to change it for adding the suffix (change the y to an i).
drop the y for an i
- countries
- diaries
- hurried
double up for a short vowel sound
- accommodate
- immediately
- embarrass
drop the e
- advising
- evaporating
- practising
i before e, except after c
- ceiling
- receive
- believe
Cookery after-school club
At cookery club this evening, the recipe was a simple vegetarian curry. Hope the children enjoyed their tea!
For those who didn’t attend, here is the recipe to try at home.
Thank you!
Thank you to all family and friends who came to watch our assembly this afternoon.
Despite our prop malfunction, we hope you enjoyed the arty assembly and finding out about some of our learning so far in Year 2.
There were a few nerves beforehand but we were very proud of all the children who spoke or acted very confidently in front of the big audience.
Well done, Year 2!
What’s appeared in our classroom?
Towards the end of last week, this strange object appeared in our reading corner.
It’s a bomb shelter!
Here’s Sam explaining how he built the shelter with the help of Elias, Brandon, Archie and Oliver.
‘We used card, plumbing poles and some camo to build it. We painted some corrugated card grey to make it look like a real WW2 metal shelter. Then, we worked as a team to build it. We also put tins of beans and some torches in there to make it more realistic.’

Bonfire Celebrations themed menu
Catering Agency, our school meal provider, will be running a special themed menu on Wednesday 02 November: Bonfire Celebrations. Please contact the office if your child would like a school dinner on this day.
Independent Research Project
Yesterday, as part of our ‘Class Novel’ topic, we started our independent research projects.
Every child in Year 5 is completing a different project – wow! Some are making models, some are creating posters and some are making computer games! Each child is researching an aspect of life on the Home Front during WW2.
In our first session, we worked independently (and collaboratively at times) on our projects and made a fantastic start! Stay tuned to see how we get on.
School Saving Club
Does your child have a School Saving Club account in association with Leeds Credit Union?
If so, our next paying in date is this Thursday 13 October 3.15-3.45pm. If you can’t make this date, then the next one will be on Thursday 08 December at 3.15-3.45pm.
Children must be accompanied to the sessions.
If you can’t attend the date, you can bring money to the office in a sealed envelope marked School Saving Club for the attention of Miss Hale.
School Saving Club accounts can still be opened. Please ask at the office for an application form.
Children who are in Year 3 will have their account credited by Leeds City Council with £10 once opened.
Maths learning
This week the children have been learning to recognise, write and order numerals by finding missing numbers around school.
Science in Year 2
In a science lesson last week, we were learning about classification. Children had to classify leaves in different ways.
