School council elections

Posted on Wednesday 04 February 2015 by Mrs Taylor

Our current school councillors held their final meeting recently as we prepare to elect our new school council.

Children from every class, including Reception, are encouraged to prepare a speech to present to their class as part of the election process.  Our whole school homework before the election date will give children the chance to plan their speech.

Thank you to our existing school council who have been involved with many decisions and discussions throughout the year.  Most recently they have selected books for our library and pupil prizes as rewards in class.

The homeworks this week are Creative and Practice Makes Perfect.

The Creative homework is to design a section of our ‘contraption’ display. We are currently taking inspiration from ‘Rube Goldberg machines’ to make a contraption out of things we have in and around the classroom. Children have to plan and explain how their section would work and suggest materials which we could use to make it. The trickiest part of this is that most of the contraption has to hang from the wall.

A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption, invention, device or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered or overdone to perform a very simple task in a very complicated fashion, usually including a chain reaction. For ideas and inspiration, just ‘Rube Goldberg machine’ into youtube.

The Practice Makes Perfect homework is a Mathletics activity on our next unit of maths: measures.

Better than?

Posted on Friday 21 November 2014 by Mr Wilks

On Wednesday, we had a visit from Jhardine Farrell, who talked to us about our perceptions of people. It was a great, interactive session which challenged children’s images of people. I was so impressed with the mature conversations the children engaged in. Some of their responses are listed below:

“We are all different but we are all equal.”
“We should all be treated the same.”
“No one is better than anyone else.”
“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
“Some people may think they are better than others but inside we are all the same.”

It was great to hear so many thoughtful, respectful comments. We just need to ensure that we remember this whenever we meet new people, walk past people in the street, see a new person at school, get a new neighbour, etc.

Gymnastics

Posted on Saturday 01 November 2014 by Mrs Taylor

Year 4, 5, and 6 have been working with gym coaches, Jane and Charlotte, from Temple Newsam gymnastics club.  This initiative is part of our investment of the PE government funding to up-skill class teachers in their teaching of gymnastics and provide high quality gymnastic sessions for our pupils.

For any children who want to develop their gymnastics skills further, Jane and Charlotte run after-school classes at their gym centres, Barwick village hall and Temple Moor high school.

Gledhow vs Moortown Year 5 football team match report by Lennox

We played Gledhow Primary School.  I think we were the better side as the wingers, Archie, Sam and Bailey, ran the show.  They crossed the ball on countless opportunities to the strikers.  I hit the post twice with two left footed shots.  The defenders were great when they cleared the ball and used their strength against their attackers.  Unfortunately we lost 4-0 but we played much better than before.

17 October 2014

Posted on Thursday 16 October 2014 by Mr Roundtree

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Wednesday 22 October 2014.

Is this art?

You have got four pieces of art to look at. All of them are very different.

  • ‘Swept under the carpet’ – Banksy
  • ‘Family of man’ – Barbara Hepworth
  • ‘Rain princess’ – Leonid Afremov
  • ‘Essence of elephants’ – Greg du Toit

Have a conversation around the dinner table or in the car about these pieces. Are they art? Do you like them? Which is your favourite? Make some notes about your ideas in your homework book and bring these to our class discussion on Wednesday 22 October.

Angle fun!

Posted on Tuesday 14 October 2014 by Mr Wilks

Look at the pictures below and ask your child the names of the three types of angles the children are showing. The first person to give me the answers (on paper, not shouted across the playground tomorrow morning) will receive three fuzzies.
