Talk Time Homework Review
Last week, Year 6 were set a Talk Time homework about how people they know use maths every day. We reflected on this as a class and it was fascinating for us to discover that maths is everywhere. Here are some quotes from our discussion:
- “When you are paying for parking it sometimes says ‘exact change only’. This means you need to estimate (or calculate) how long you will be there for and how much this will cost. You then need to count accurately to ensure you don’t waste any money.” – Jennifer
- “My dad needs to calculate the cost of materials before factoring in a margin for profit!” – Simran
- “My parents need to ensure they calculate the cost of VAT accurately so that they make enough money in the restaurant!” – Linda
- “My uncle needs to accurately calculate any profits or losses that his business makes!” – Yahya
Football Carousel
Once again, Year 6 have enjoyed a lesson with the Leeds United coaches. They have been sweating, breathing heavily and have been exercising until they dropped. One of our year 6 members said: “It was fun but hard work.”

Football Olympics @ Wigton Moor
Some of our Year 5 class had a great time playing in the Olympic Football Festival today.
Things didn’t always go our way but everyone remained positive, focused and resilient.
It was great to see high levels of sportsmanship and respect from our children throughout the day – well done!
The highlight came in our last match as we swept aside the opposition 4-0 and the sun broke through the clouds!
Here’s some action shots:
Miss Hale, team manager for the day, summed up our efforts: “We fought valiantly throughout and spirits remained high. Despite some tough opposition, we still managed to win our final game. The sun even came out, too!”
School Library
We’re always trying to promote a love of reading in school – especially in Year 6!
Today, we all went to the library to change our books. We scoured the shelves (which look great), chose a new book, sat down, chilled out and, most importantly, read!
We now all have a library book to be enjoying at home – including me!
- Encouraging your child to read their library book (and other books) at home
- Discussing your child’s book with them
- Talking about reading in general
- Reading with them and ask questions.
Do plants need sun?
Earlier in the term, we talked about what things plants needed to survive.
This video shows how much the plants need the energy from sunlight to keep them alive.
Leeds United Football Training
This afternoon, the Y6 children have enjoyed an amazing lesson by Leeds United. Starting with the amusing warm up and then followed by an immensely enjoyable lesson.
Clearly having fun!

School Saving Accounts
Our next paying in session for children with School Saving Accounts is this week.
- Wednesday 22 June 3.15pm
You’re welcome to accompany your child to pay in their money. If you can’t come, or maybe your child is at an after-school club, you can bring money to the office in a sealed envelope marked ‘School Saving Account’ with your child’s paying in card and this will be deposited into their account.
Also, it’s not too late to open an account. Please ask at the office for an application form.
The next paying in session this term is Wednesday 20 July 3.15pm.
Homework review
Our reponses to the recent creative homework relating to Money Week were amazing!
It was clear that many of us had spent lots of time responding to the task and the results were impressive.
In class, we looked at other people’s before giving each other some verbal ‘stars and steps’. We then voted on our favourites:
Creative Money Homeworks
There were some brilliant Money Week homeworks on show today. Well done on your hard work. Here are some of our favourites:
Rio Challenge
This week, we have launched skills drills Rio Challenge. Linked to the upcoming Rio Olympics, pupils can attempt a series of ten timed sports drills based around core skills from different Olympic events. These include hockey, gymnastics, rugby and athletics.
Children can be part of this online competition against their peers and other schools and we will be uploading times for the quickest drills.
The drills will be carried out in PE lessons and at lunchtime. You could even have a go at home.
Rio challenge drills are led by Sports Leaders at lunchtime.
