Brownlee Foundation triathlon
Well done to some of our Year 3 and 4 pupils who were part of 950 children competing in the Brownlee Foundation triathlon at John Smeaton Leisure Centre. This event has been hosted in preparation for the World Triathlon Series held in Leeds this weekend. These children can be inspired to know that all three of the 2016 Mens Tri Olympic Team not only train in Leeds, but were born here too.
- ‘I really liked the triathlon because it makes you fit and it was really fun.’
- ‘I was really nervous at the start but I loved it. It was challenging.’
- ‘I really enjoyed it and I would like to do it again.’
- ‘It was great fun because it gave you chance to practise different sports.’
- ‘I loved it because of the excitement of it.’

Money old and new
During Money Matters week, many children were keen to show off their money collections and talk about where and when they were from. Thank you for sharing these with us.
Penny trail
It’s been great to see the generosity and enthusiasm of the children during Money Matters week to try and fill their class collecting tubes. They were filling up by the end of the week. The total amount raised for Leeds Mind and Yorkshire Air Ambulance will be revealed soon. Thank you for your donations.
School Saving Club
This week, as part of our Money Matters themed week, was the first paying in session for children who have opened their School Saving Club accounts.
It was great to see children take responsibility and start to manage their money in their new accounts.
We have two more paying in dates this term and you are welcome to accompany your child to pay in their money.
- Wednesday 22 June 3.15pm
- Wednesday 20 July 3.15pm
Also, it’s not too late to open an account. Please ask at the office for an application form.
Money Matters highlights
This week in Year 4, we threw ourselves into our Money Matters themed week. I really enjoyed working with this class and was very impressed by their attitude to learning!
There were many highlights this week:
- Visiting Barclays Bank and seeing all the ‘secret’ vaults.
- Some amazing persuasive writing.
- Our many visitors.
- A super Moneysense workshop in which we planned a fully costed party.
- Making our very own money boxes.
- Donating loads of pennies to charity.
- Sam and Grace smashing the Hotshots nets.
- And most of all, getting to know a brilliant class.
Here are some pictures:
Do you have any old or foreign coins and bank notes?
If so, we will be launching a cash4coins PTA fundraiser during our Money Matters themed week.
Many people have some old foreign currency, either notes or coins and perhaps some old UK or Irish decimal coins.
We are collecting all worldwide current currency in notes or coins and any of the older currency such as the German Marks, Spanish Pesetas, old UK shillings, old UK decimal coins including Ireland, Channel Islands, Scotland, Isle of Man and £5/£2 coins.
We can turn your old money into a valuable donation.
Please donate at the school office.
Market research
This afternoon, we were ‘market researchers’ in preparation for our restaurant day on Friday (ask your child about this exciting learning).
Some of us went to Marks and Spencer’s and Cooplands to see which salads are available. Some of us carried out our market research here in school; either by asking adults or searching the Internet.
We then used our findings to decide on a salad that we will make (and sell – kind of) later in the week.
Toys
In our topic lessons, we’ve been looking at and playing with Victorian toys. The children had to reason about what the toys were and how children would have used them. If they didn’t know or couldn’t figure it out, they used secondary sources to find out. The whip and top foxed them the most!
Creative Art Homeworks
Here are our favourite homeworks from last week. They were all great so it was very hard to choose!
