Living and Learning – Safer Internet Day

Year 6 spent the day learning about how to be safe while online, whether that be using computers, laptops or iPads; using our phones; or using different apps.

We started by discussing how great the internet and having a phone can be and sharing what we use them for and when we use them.

We discussed a video from Newsround which showed us some scenarios of things that have happened to people when they’ve not used the internet safely enough – why not watch it again at home and chat about it together?

When we talked about using phones, Year 6 were very able to discuss how phones could put us in danger and the decisions we could make that will keep us safe. We spent a lot of time discussing not only what sort of information we do and don’t share but also, the impacts of sharing things that we’d then regret. Again, we watched a video from the NSPCC which allowed us to discuss what bad decisions were made and how we can make sure we’re not put in that situation. Watch it at home and discuss it together. This video runs alongside one of the leaflets your child has brought home too so there might be some guidance in there on what to talk about.

We ended the day working with Splats, performing a play which passed on the message of e-safety.

Some of us were people who weren’t mean online…
…and some of us chose to be mean online.
The ‘safety robot’ helped us know what to do.
And somehow, it ended in a dance!

Lots of fun but lots of important messages given through our acting.

Circulatory system

Our Topic lessons are all about the human body this week.

We carried out an investigation to see how exercise and resting affects our heart rates; this information was then plotted onto a graph so that we were better able to spot patterns and reflect on whether we’d carried the investigation out correctly.

Then, we learnt all about the circulatory system using a huge diagram of a person.

Blood carries oxygen to other important organs.
It also beings waste (and carbon dioxide) away from our organs so that it can leave the body.

It was clear that our blood had lots more jobs than we first realised! Take a look at The Blood Mobile – a video which shows you all of the amazing things our blood does.

Create ways for you to remember how to spell these words and generally practise using the strategies in the back of your homework book. Don’t forget to try adding prefixes and suffixes to the words. Spelling practice is best done little and often so make sure you come back to the spellings at least three times in the week. Date your practice and ask an adult to sign it to show that you’re practising regularly. There will be a test on Friday 07 February.

02 February 2018

This week’s homework is Creative and is due on Thursday 06 February.

How does the human body work?

Our topic learning next week will be all about the human body so we’re challenging the children either to tell us something they know already or find out something new to teach us.

This homework will be used to create a class information book which we’ll keep in our reading area. Because of this, it must be completed on the page of the homework book (not on extra sheets or on the computer). This could be an information text, a diagram, a story which tells the journey of food through the body, a lift the flap information page, a leaflet – anything really!

There are all sorts of things you could inform us about:

  • different organs (Did you know… your skin is an organ?)
  • the digestive system
  • the circulatory system
  • our teeth
  • how the brain works
  • the skeletal system
  • the nervous system
  • how we change as we grow older

This week  the homework is again practice makes perfect. We have working hard in our writing sessions to use conjunctions to make our sentences more interesting.

Use the correct conjunction to make the sentences in your homework book more interesting.

Please return you homework book next Thursday.

26 January 2018

This week’s homework is Practice Makes Perfect and is due on Thursday 01 February.

I can calculate with fractions.

We learnt everything there is to know about fractions before Christmas and were able to calculate confidently. Sometimes, it can be hard to remember all of that information over a long period of time so, this week, we’re reminding ourselves of that fraction learning.

Your child should be able to solve all of the calculations they’ve been given independently. They could answer a few each day or they could challenge themselves to complete it in as many minutes as there are questions.

We’ll go through the answers when homework is returned on Thursday as well as discussing whether there are any of these calculations we need to go over again as a class.
