15 January 2016

This week’s homework is Creative and is due on Wednesday 19 January.

What is Life?

Our new topic will be ‘Life’:

  • How do we know about ‘Life’ in the past?
  • How have species changed over time?
  • What different types of animals are there?
  • How do animals change throughout their life?
  • What keeps humans alive?

Explore what you think ‘life’ is. Are there any things that you would argue aren’t experiencing ‘life’ as you understand it? Think about how you can present your views in a creative way.

You could prepare a presentation, create an image, write a story outlining what ‘Life’ is… Enjoy!

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework focusses on reading comprehensions skills.

To be able to pick out evidence from a text.

Read the text and answer the two questions. Think about how you can make sure that you gain all three marks for each:

  • Give three reasons.
  • Explain your choices in relation to the question.
  • Pick out evidence from the text.

Library books

This week, we visited our lovely school library and the children chose books to take home for the week. They were really enthusiastic about choosing their own book and were allowed to choose any book they wished from the Key Stage 1 choice of books. Please ensure your child looks after their book and returns it to school on Friday 15 January. If your child wishes to keep the book for longer then that is fine, but please note that a new book will not be issued without the return of the old one! I hope you enjoy reading together.

Have a lovely weekend!

This week’s Practice Makes Perfect homework is due on Wednesday 13 January.

I have been assigned three Mathletics tasks.

The children need to log on to Mathletics where they will find that they’ve been assigned three tasks.

  • multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000
  • dividing by 10, 100 and 1000
  • adding capacity

These tasks must be completed by Wednesday and if there are any problems with accessing Mathletics, I need to be told before so that they can be given time in school.

Science: Wow!

On Wednesday, Y5 enjoyed a morning jam-packed working scientifically. We saw some awesome reactions that made us gasp as well as taking on some observing, measuring and recording of our own mini experiments.

Here is some of our favourite ‘Wow’ science. Don’t worry… no Y5s were harmed during filming.

What happens when you heat custard powder?

What happens when you set hydrogen on fire?

School charities

In 2014 and 2015, we raised £2,205.36 for Cancer Research UK and £2,164.66 for St Gemma’s Hospice.

Moortown Primary is a happy, healthy and caring place to be.

That’s why we support two charities for two years. In 2014 and 2015, we supported Cancer Research UK and St Gemma’s Hospice.

In 2014 and 2015, we raised £2,205.36 for Cancer Research UK and £2,164.66 for St Gemma’s Hospice. (The amounts are slightly different because of the different fund-raising events over the two years – some are specifically for just one of the two charities.)

Thank you for your support.

Two new charities will be chosen by pupils this month. There will be a Talk Time homework – your child will discuss ideas at home. Following this, each class will discuss ideas so make sure your child can talk about their preferred charities with reasons why they think Moortown Primary should support them. At the end of the discussion, two charities from each class will be nominated. The School Council will then consider the charities from this shortlist and finally agree on the two charities we will support in 2016 and 2017.

Welcome back!

2016 has hit the ground running in Y5. We welcomed each other back on Monday with a great circle time…

We’re working really hard on new English targets and are tackling measuring capacity in Maths.

Our new mini topic ‘What’s the Matter?’ started with lots of questions and hands on discovery as we explored which materials would conduct electricity.
