In Year 6 maths, we have been learning about how numbers up to 1 million are composed. We have been partitioning, reading and writing numbers. We have used a Gattengo chart, number sentences and place value counters to help represent the numbers.

This half term’s PE units are OAA (outdoor adventurous activities) and Hockey. This week, in OAA, the children have used their amazing teamwork skills to communicate with peers.
For part of this lesson, each group needed to create their own game based off of tig. They used additional well-known games as the basis of their own, for example, What’s the time Mr wolf? and Hide and Seek.
Help at home: When else can we use our teamwork skills?
This week our L&L statement was ‘I use the eight Rs to help me learn.’ We started off by recapping the 8Rs and then looked at each one in detail and discussed different statements that match the 8Rs.
The children then reflected on which of the 8Rs they felt most confident and least confident with.
‘I feel most confident with remembering because I can remember a lot from previous year groups. I would like to get better at reflecting’
‘I feel I am getting better at risk taking by putting hand up even if I don’t know the answer and if the answer is wrong, no one will laugh – it is not the end of the world!’
‘I would like to improve at being resilient. I want to keep trying my best and can ask for help, if I need it.’
‘I am the least confident at remembering as I forget to bring things into school like my reading record. However, I can start to write notes to remind myself.’
Help at home: Name all the 8Rs and discuss how they relate to learning at school.
Welcome back after the summer holiday. We hope you had a happy and healthy summer. It has been great to see so many happy faces back in school. The children have settled really well in their first week and are adapting to new routines and classrooms.
This week, we will send the children home with a reading book, a homework book and a new reading record book. It is really beneficial that your child reads at home daily – it improves fluency and increases the enjoyment of reading. The children can record what they’ve read at home in the reading records. We will also set a task for them to complete at home. Please ask your child what their task is for their homework and actively encourage them to think about the presentation of their work in the journals and the importance of neat handwriting and accurate use of punctuation.

We are looking forward to a successful year!
In Living and Learning this week, we looked at the school rules and why they are important. We had a discussion where children were able to share their opinion on which rule they thought was the most important.
‘I think being safe is the most important because if we are all safe in school it means that we keep our hands and feet to ourselves and that also links with being respectful.’
‘I think being ready is the most important because it means we are ready to learn and that’s why we come to school.’
We then discussed how we can show the rules are being followed in school. For example, we can show we are respectful by using our manners (saying please, thank you, good morning etc.).
There is also a change with our ‘3,2,1…Stop’ actions. The children should now show they are ready by having silent voices, positive body language and focus on the speaker.

This morning, Year 6 made a tomato sauce base for pasta.
We worked in small groups to prepare the ingredients and then cook them. We made sure that we washed our hands and wore our aprons for hygiene reasons.
We used the bridge cutting method and the claw cutting method to cut up our vegetables. These methods are the safest way to cut food as they help us from hurting ourselves!
We cooked some pasta alongside our sauce so we could try it!

As the end of this school year is approaching, the children have asked to include their baby photos in their leavers’ assembly. Please can you email in a baby photo of your child ASAP, if they wish to join in.
It was really nice to see Year 6 enjoy their last sports day at Moortown Primary School. Today really showed off the happy and healthy lifestyle we have. Well done for everyone who took part in the races and thank you to the adults who came to support.
Year 5 and Year 6 hosted Enterprise Day yesterday afternoon. The children were loaned £5 each from Virgin Money to be entrepreneur and create a stall which would make a profit. And, the children did exactly that! They created a refreshment stall, a pick n mix stand and an ice lolly booth (just to name a few). The played games like beat the keeper, how many hoops and splat the Year 5.
