Exploring pattern

In a recent art session, we looked at artwork by one of our featured artists: Martha McDonald Napaltjarri.

We closely observed the pattern within each piece of art and discussed what we could see.

We then explored our own patterns inspired by Napaltjarri and here’s some of our work.

05 November 2021

This week, we’ve been learning about the spelling rule:

double up for a short vowel sound

An example of this is in the word difficult. The ‘i’ is a short sound if you read it aloud, therefore the following consonant ‘f’ needs to be doubled up. Another example is trapped.

To help consolidate this learning, we’d like you to practise spelling these words at home.

different, difficult, possible, trapped, happening, opposite, arrive

We’ll test ourselves on Friday 12 November to see how we’ve got on.

This week, we’ve been learning about some common homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings – this is one of the reasons why English spelling is super tricky!

To help consolidate this learning, we’d like you to practise spelling these words at home. Because they’re homophones, it’s most useful to practise these in sentences. You could do this in the car, on a walk or around the table.

there, they’re, their, which, witch, to, two, too

We’ll test ourselves on Thursday 21 October to see how we’ve got on.

Living and Learning: mental health and wellbeing

In a recent Living and Learning session, we talked all about our emotions.

We talked about different emotions we sometimes feel and we also looked at some techniques to help deal with emotions.

We practised mindfulness listening and breathing as a technique to help us when we might get angry or want to calm down.

After that, we all played a game to consolidate this learning.  Each player rolled a dice and whichever number they rolled landed them on a particular emotion. Depending on the colour of the emotion, each child would have to tell their partner about a time they felt that emotion, act the emotion out or draw an emoji to express the emotion.

This week, we’ve been learning how the ‘ue’ sound can be spelled in lots of different ways. For example, in the word ‘conclude’, the letters ‘u-e’ make the ‘ue’ sound but in the word ‘popular’ it’s the letter ‘u’.

To help consolidate this learning, we’d like you to practise spelling these words at home.

continue, popular, June, regular, queue, rescue, conclude, amuse

We’ll test ourselves on Friday 15 October to see how we’ve got on.

Reading Record

Well done to everybody who gave Book Wars such a great go. I was thrilled listening to what you’ve all been reading and why you liked your book so much! Well done to Avneet for earning a certificate for her efforts!

This week, we’d like you to complete the ‘question maker’ activity in your reading record – don’t forget to ask an adult to sign this, too.

Thanks

Mr Wain

01 October 2021

This week, we’ve been learning how the ‘ie’ sound can be spelled in lots of different ways. For example, in the word ‘describe’, the letters ‘i-e’ make the ‘ie’ sound but in the word ‘supply’ it’s the letter ‘y’.

To help consolidate this learning, we’d like you to practise spelling these words at home.

describe                decide               height             surprise

replied                   cried                  polite              supply

We’ll test ourselves on Friday 08 October to see how we’ve got on.

Living and Learning: 8Rs for learning

The Eight Rs for Learning promote good learning behaviour.

They include being resilientresponsiblereflectivereadyresourcefulrisk takingresponsive and there is one more.

Can your child remember the last one?

Although these eight attributes have been our current focus in Living and Learning, we refer to the 8Rs throughout the year. We thought about some ways the children have shown these 8Rs for learning in school or at home and here’s what they said.

Read more about the Eight Rs in our guide for parents and carers.

24 September 2021

This week, we have been focussing on the ‘oa’ phoneme and we’ve looked at all the alternative graphemes for this sound.

The words you need to practise this week are:

notice, suppose, though, although, heroes, those, glowing, phone

We’ll test ourselves on Friday 1st October.

Reading Records

Hi guys!

Just a quick note regarding reading records.

  • Book Club is on a Friday
  • Parents need to comment in reading records in preparation for Book Club
  • A comment should give an insight to how your child has got on with their reading at home that week
  • Children must engage with the weekly activity and complete it so that it can be reviewed on a Friday in Book Club
  • Children will be sent home with a Library book on a Monday (our Library session) unless they’re still reading the same book from the week before
  • Children can read a range of texts (not just their library books) and these can include:
    – newspapers
    – non-fiction books
    – novels
    – picture books
    – poetry
    – magazines
    – comics
    – recipes
    – manuals
    – and many more!

Top tip: If your child is watching television or a film, stick the subtitles on! This can improve your child’s comprehension, help your child maintain concentration for longer periods and according to a small study, children who watched TV with the subtitles on were more proficient readers!

Happy reading!
